I have once in awhile, discussed this topic with my brother a few times and i'm wondering if anyone has actually done this in public, not on your property but in public.

I haven't, but the army guy standing next to me was... guarding the Somersworth/Berwick bridge during the flood did. Prolly don't count though huh? -wingnut13

Only down the street a few times to my truck. Maybe 1/2 block, people sneered, I live in a pretty liberal area.

Years ago, but it wasn't "open carry", it was just a teenager getting across town and out to where we'd deer hunt. Not only did people not sneer, they didn't really notice.

All the time, right on the "Main Streets", in my radius of Northwestern NC towns where it's still "normal"... people correctly assume you're going to or from one of the several local gun stores or pawn shops.

God bless what's left of the USA...

Nope...I always go concealed when I carry my Remington 700P in 300 Win Mag. Gotta admit though, that IWB holster is not real comfortable:)

Sorry..Couldn't resist.

I open carried my DW 357 with 8" barrel in a cowboy rig in Miami, when I went night fishing. The only hassle I got was from the Marine patrol, they said I was asking for trouble, after calling in and I had to explain that in plain sight isn't CCW. I used to carry legal CCW, but after a few incidents, that could have gotten bad, I decided to advertize and avoid a confrontation. I lived there 4 years and open carried the last 3 without any problems.

i remember the flood but didn't really notice any guardsmen with rifles, but then again it was before i was interested in guns. I live in somersworth and i remember some guy telling us to get to highground cause the dam broke oh no! but it didn't.

Nope.

Where I live open carrying a rifle or shotgun in public would undoubtedly trigger a police response.

I have open carried long guns through a mall before however. The only decent local gun shop is located inside a mall and I've carried in and out of there a number of times.

However I've never carried around a rifle for defensive purposes before so my answer to the question remains, no.

I SmartCarry my Bushmaster. Dang does that thing pinch in bad places.

Serious answer: Haven't done it.

Yes today at my home to my car and from my car to the gunshow. Also in NY, even in a restaurant in the hamptons. I never got any weird looks. If you look like your supposed to be doing something, most people will assume you are. We used to go bird hunting on LI all the time with a group of 4-6 guys.

Back around 1965 when I was in grade school, we had a special display about the Revolutionary War.

I had this old WWII Japanese Rifle that I thought was really old, so I took it on the bus to school.

One of the teachers explained to me that it was a Japanese Rifle from WWII. I didn't believe him.

They put the gun on display anyway. Perhaps it was "what does NOT belong in this display?"

Anyway, I remember him telling me that he "has a part" for my gun, and that, if I need the part, let him know, after I take the gun home, and he will give me the part. Just being a kid, and not knowing much about guns, I forgot about it. The gun went back on display over our fireplace.

It seems that he had taken the firing pin or something out of it, as it was found to be missing a firing pin about 15 years ago. Now I reload for it and can shoot potato-size rocks at 100 yards with Hornady Bullets.

When I was in high school (mid 70's) we had rifle team there with an indoor range sponsored by the ROTC. Almost all year long about 3 days a week I would sling my .22 target rifle over my shoulder and walk to school, put it in my locker, and use it after school. Also in hunting season several friends would bring their 30-30's and such in and leave them in the office for safe keeping so that they could go hunting in the woods behind the school after classes.:D What if you tried that now!:cuss: The times sure are a changing.:scrutiny: BTW the only rule was NO handguns in the school, you had to keep them in your car in the parking area. This was in Bangor Maine.

In small town Kansas, yes. In larger cities such as Wichita - NO!
If you are a local in a small town, no one thinks twice about it, especially during hunting season. In fact, people are happy to see you because they know hunters bring dollars to help the local economy.

I did 3 times. There is a private rifle range 6.8 miles from my house. I slung my sharps rifle and rode my bicycle there shot and biked back home. Aparently there is some sort of local law against oc rifles, I was pulled over by the local pd on my way home for the third timeand was advised it was unlawful but let me finish my ride home. oddly I can not find any such law on the books but I also used my last visit to the range until membership is final.

In grade school I often rode a horse to school and always had a 22 rifle in a saddle scabbard. Today I nearly always have a long gun in the pick up seat with me. Had my p/u serviced last week and new tires put on, had a rifle and a shotgun in the cab and a Colt trooper MK III on the seat. No big deal!!!

There was a very famous incident last August in which a man was carrying an AR outside Obama's Town Hall Meeting in Phoenix.

No. Those newfangled handguns are so much more practical and convenient that I carry one of those instead.
Seriously, other than to make some kind of political point, why would you want to carry a long gun around all day? YMMV, but I don't live in a war zone and the advantages afforded by a rifle would be dramatically outweighed by its interference with my mundane daily tasks.

Yes - but we have a shotgun range at the end of the street, also, during open season, plenty of people are getting together and heading out for deer and elk...

Personally I have no problem with people doing this, no worse than some one walking around with a shovel, axe or chainsaw... a firearm is just another tool, and we're tool using creatures.

Yeah I carried a rifle in a window rack of a truck for years, and have ridden my motorcycle to the range with a FAL slung across my back here and there.

I've carried an AR in the front seat thousands of times.

Just walking down the street with a rifle? Just a few times here and there, mostly in rural areas when I was younger.

Texas doesn't really have any laws around the carrying of long guns.
