Haven't Seen Any S&W Model 25's Lately

They're another of those "cognoscenti," guns. People in the know buy them, but there are so few of those around that they're a special order item.

S&W is producing all the guns they can to try and meet the demand for more popular models. The Model 25 has never been a big seller, so I suspect folks who want a new one will have to wait a while unless they can find a dealer or distributor who has one in stock.

In today's culture, 9mm semiautos rule, at least they seem to economically. I think I'm what the Germans called Patton, "ein anachronismus". Those old Smith revolvers were (and are) a work of beauty.

Model 25 (-2 and -5) have been replaced by the stainless versions. Those of us with 25s, rarely let them go. I have been looking for a 4" -5 and have not had luck.

For some of the prices I've seen them for used I gave up. Sorry I'm cheap and cut the budget at $600 for a Model 25. I've bought and can get another SRH .454 Casull for under $700. I know a guy who is sitting on one, 9.5" I believe" and hasn't found someone willing to pay $600 for it. If it's still around come December then I'll buy it. Send it off to Pinnacle, and have them shorten the barrel to 5.5" and convert to also fire .45 ACP. By the time it's said and done It'll be just north of $900 probably but I don't plan on trying to sell it to recoup anything.

I know one guy who got the conversion done on his, and thought about doing it on my 7.5" but I'd rather have another revolver that is purely dedicated to .45 ACP. He's been shooting .45 ACP out of his for two years without a single problem and he let me inspect the barrel which is great shape. It loses some accuracy past 20 yards he tells so when he wants to shoot past 20 yards he ups it to a hot .45 LC or .454 Casull. I shot it for six shots with the .45 ACP and it recoiled like my S&W 15-3 with wadcutters. And it was really accurate at 20 yards to boot.

I let a 25-5 slip through my hands for $500 last year that I'm still kicking myself over. It was at a local pawn shop. I went by on a lunch break, ran out of time and went the next evening and it was gone. The store owner said Hed of held on to it for me, but I didn't know I was serious about it. Next time ill just have them hold it with a CC number.

The Model 25 is arguably the finest large-bore target revolver ever produced--superb balance, trigger, accuracy, and looks. Those who know them will pay plenty to acquire one, and, because they're relatively scarce, the best examples are costly. But, sure, they're still to be had.

My 25-2 Model of 1955 (1977) was NIB when I bought it for $750 a few years ago. It isn't anymore, I'm glad to say.
