I have a dandy 870 12 ga w/ mag extension and 20" bbl. as an HD gun, but for the sake of the boss (she's barely 5'2"), I'm thinking of setting up a youth stock 870 20 ga. But, I can't find any mag extensions for 20s. Any ideas about sources.

That's one of the questions I asked in my Gander Mtn Sale thread. I have a 1100 LT-20 and I looked with no luck for any mag extensions on the internet.

Not sure about the mag extension. Egunparts.com shows the same follower, spring, and endcap for a 12g and a 20g. So, it's a reasonable guess that the 12g extension will work. But maybe I don't know enough about Remington??? Anyone else?

I've heard that the lighter 20 g with the youth stock increases recoil. Seems logical but not sure how much the difference is. My wife shoots my 12 g Mossberg and I doubt a Remington 20 is lighter than that or recoils anywhere near as bad. My wife is small but is a fireball.

Also, not sure if there are reduced recoil loads for 20 guage like those available for 12 g but if not you could load some or have someone else load them.

1100 would be the thing if you want less recoil.

The 20 gauge YE Express 870 here is a fine little arm, but recoil is worse, not better, than a 12 gauge. Not too bad with 7/8 oz loads, but 1 oz stuff kills in front and wounds behind. Buck loads are stout.

Choate sold an extension and perhaps still does.

HTH....

Jim,

Adding weight out in front of the gun (like a magazine extension) might not be a good approach, no matter what gauge it is. My DW (5'4") dislikes magazine extensions intensely for that reason- she says it makes the gun too hard to support. She also much prefers a field-length forearm to the shorter law enforcement style, and her preference is for a 12.5" LOP stock with a good recoil pad. House guns here are built to suit her, with furniture as above, 18- 20" barrels, 4-shot Sidesaddles and detachable lights (Streamlight M3 or LEDWave Z-5) on rails.

She tried the 870 Youth Express gun in 20 ga. back when she was shooting 3-gun, and decided to stick with a 12 ga. and low recoil loads.

Another option is the Knox Spec Ops stock. I just picked one up. Does indeed take the sting out and has an adjustable LOP. Not too good with the Surefire forend though.
