I keep a SG in the closet for HD as a backup / heavy artillary. (My main

weapon is a handgun). I've always keep it loaded with buck (latley, tac.00)

and keep a few rounds of slug in the cuff just in case.

I've been wondering why bother with buck at all and not go with just

slugs? I'ts intended use is for once everyone is barracaded in the safe

room. I live in a semi-rural area and know the lanes of fire from the safe

room. The ranges are short in my home 18ft longest range so not much shot spread (patterned at 10, 15, 18 and 20ft, about 4-1/2" @ 18ft).

What advantages does buck have over slugs?

It sounds like you need some of the Choke brand bonded buckshot.

All of the pellets are stuck together, and they split up and go their seperate ways after striking a target--that seems like a pretty clear advantage over a slug.

Slugs tend to overpenetrate, not using up all their energy IN the target. You may want to measure, not guesstimate, the longest shot opp inside, then add a yard for GPs. Pattern different ammo at that range and go with whatever has a palm sized pattern.

The Archives here have scads of info on this...

Just a thought... at those short distances (like I have) you might want to pattern the Federal Personal Defense shells. The ads say they have a faster opening pattern to get a bit more spread at short ranges. In my Mossy they work very, very well and do spread some, but with a more consistent pattern (fewer fliers) than others.
