HD handguns VS "fun" range guns

All my "HD" guns are also my carry guns and range guns. I dont ever go to a range just to plink. When I do shoot (1-2 times a week) it is to work on skills with the gun that I'dy need to save my life. In addition, all of my guns are 1911s, so that I have the same manual of arms everytime. Be it in .45 or 9mm.

I have what i call "Work" guns and "fun" guns which are treated differently.

My work guns are my CCW and HD guns and the main rule is they much remain as stock as possible for reliability reasons, But can be shot as much as i can afford to for practice.

My fun guns are range guns only and i can do anything i want to them physically. This keeps my hands off the work guns also. These guns are also usually .22lr also so i can shoot all day and not cost crazy amounts.

I tool my CCW guns out for the afternoon this past week and 2 hours of shooting cost well over $70. My .22lr's even with higher end ammo usually max out at $25 and thats 4-6 hours of shooting.

We have a number of range guns: Henry H001Y, Ruger 10/22, S&W MP15-22, SIG Mosquito and a pair of Walther P22s. The whole family enjoys shooting them and a couple of bulk boxes of Remington Golden Bullets make for a fun day at the range. I don't get to shoot these very much; I am busy loading magazines.

However, at least a couple of the heavier weapons go along on every trip. We have two S&W J-frames (M60 and M637), two full-size 9mms (Beretta PX4 Storm F and FNP-9) and three .380s (Beretta 84FS Cheetah, Browning BDA .380 and Walther PK380). They will account for a couple hundred rounds.

Home defense? My wife keeps her Browning in her nightstand, what I am carrying depends on what I am wearing and a Beretta CX4 carbine with a 20-round magazine is by the work area in my office, which has a commanding view of both front and rear doors.

When I shoot at the indoor range, I usually CCW it and don't even shoot it because of the no-loaded-guns policy.*
How do you develop an appreciable skill with it?
I don't always shoot at the indoor range. :) Oh, don't worry, I have shot it plenty. Anyway, it's a GLOCK. Even if I'm spending more time with the new flavor of the month, I don't see how I would mess up the GLOCK under stress. I keep my finger off the trigger until I want bullets to exit with ALL my guns. I pull the trigger when I want bullets to exit with ALL my guns. :)

In a moment of stress, if I picked up any other gun in my house I would have a tiny bit of doubt as to its state of readiness - Is it even loaded? Wasn't I dry-firing it the other day? Is it chambered? Safety up/down/sideways? Where's the spare mags/ammo?

If I picked up my G27, I wouldn't feel the need to even check the chamber, and I know exactly where the loaded spare mags are. It's the gun I decided I'm not going to "play with." It's just going to stay in the same exact spot, loaded and ready. If I had a larger house, I might have more than 1 dedicated defense gun. But as it is, I'd rather not have to put guns back in the safe every time I leave the house. :)
