Small group of about 50 attended. I overheard some anti's make their presence known. He is a good and very casual speaker. In the half hour he went over various points that were made in TBAG (no pun intended). He mentioned how 5 gallon buckets with 4 inches of water in them kill more kids accidentaly under the age of 10 than those under the age of 5 with guns. At the end he took some questions, one girl, who obviously wasn't listening (this was at the law school BTW) pipes up with her, I'm guessing, Brady Bunch talking point.
Her:"Hmm, but how can the proliferation of guns in our country also cause crime to go down when there are so many guns and violence and not to mention 60% of suicides in the US are done with guns whereas in other civilized countries like Japan, where there are no guns, there is little crime?"
Lott: "Japan's suicide rate is 3 times as high as ours."
her: stammering "b-but without the use of guns."
I don't think that she saw her negate her own point. Lott told her she wasn't really hearing what he was saying and went on to tell her the true facts of the matter and how they relate, essentially that gun ownership and violence vary drastically in many countries, but that there is not much correllation and that there are classification problems.
I asked the girl, after the talk, if she "know's what the suicide rate in Switzerland is? I'm just curious?"
her: "oh well, because they have guns in every house?"
me: "yeah, a machine gun in most every home."
her: "No, I don't know what the suicide rate is there."
me: "Ok, just wondering."
her: "But Japan has no guns and little crime."
I left after that but should have asked her about England. It doesn't matter because she didn't want to hear it anyway.
FYI, this was in San Diego PRK and there was IMHO a 10/1 ratio of pro-2A/CCW'rs vs. Anti's.
