heat shield on an 870?

will the Mossberg brand heat shields fit? If not, does anyone make custom (quality) 870 heatshields for an 18.5" barrel? what about the Mossberg brand 870 barrels? Will those accomodate one?

Food for thought, if anything. I might be able to pick up a Wingmaster in trade for work, and I'm scheming on a build like the true windowshopper I am.

I do rollover reloads. My guns get SUPER hot at the range, especially when I'm just out having fun. Plus, I like some added weight on a shotgun. I'd only want to do it if I found a quality option. No offense to the poster above, but I wouldn't put an ATI heatshield on any of my guns unless it was welded to the barrel.

None taken, but I don't see what "quality" you are looking for that the ATI version doesn't give you. If you mount it correctly its not going to get in the way or move around, and it serves the purpose of keeping you from burning yourself just fine.

Why do you think you need a heat shield to begin with? Competitive shooters shoot 200-300 rounds in a day and don't need them. Unless it is to be seen as ultra cool then there is no reason.

I wish I didn't have one on my Mossberg 500 Cruiser. I may even be able to remove it without any damage. I actually thought I'd be shooting it enough that I'd need it. Oh well, it looks cool. Not sure it's needed though.

as i mentioned before, I do rollover reloads. Especially at the range. It may not be "proper", but it's faster for me so it's proper for me. If there isn't a heat shield in place, I'll NEED to be wearing gloves. Sometimes I forget gloves. I don't know about you guys but my barrel will heat up too hot to the touch after one tube full of # 8 shot!

Second, it adds weight to the gun. I like a little added weight to a gun and feel it really soaks up recoil.

Yes, it does look cool when done right, but that's 3rd in importance here. I've heard the ATI walks loose really easily and scratches the barrel. But again, that's what I've just heard. I wouldn't be adverse to a permanent or semi-permanent install on an old 18.5" barrel in order to ensure it stayed put.

I should also mention the next Wingmaster I convert is going to be pgo. So even if I wanted to load "proper", it wouldn't be that feasible. Holding a pgo out one handed (like a pistol) feels awful. As a habit I always flip the gun over, grasping it where the barrel meets the receiver with my forend hand, and load shells with my trigger hand. The nicest pistol-grip only gun I've ever had was an 870 Wingmaster, and I attribute a lot of that to the added weight.

Pretty easy to remove. If I still had a 500 I'd offer to buy it from you :D

I don't know if a Mossberg heatshield will fit, I never tried one. When 870s were .mil issue shotguns (870 Mark 1), they were prototyped with a heat shield, but as far as I know no 870 was ever issued with a heat shield.

So there's no 'factory' version to either obtain directly or get a copy of that I have ever seen. I don't know what your options are, all I can say is 'good luck.'

haha yeah i remember that. obviously it Is possible. but id only want to do it with a quality setup.

could a heat shield be soldered onto a barrel?

Ask Denzel where he got his

From the prop department. Hollywood doesn't count.

It could be, but how would you ever clean under it if it couldn't be removed?

I've never cleaned the outside of my Mossbergs that have heat shields equipped. Before I install, I heavily lube the outside, install and pretty much forget about it....would this be bad? I'll periodically spray some CLP under the shield and let it drip onto a cloth.
obviously I still clean the bore and do everything else.
