Hello all, I just joined this community and was hoping to get some advice on pocket pistols from those with much more knowledge than me ;)

I'm looking to go a bit against normal convention here. What I'd like is to get a heavy pocket pistol. Recently I bought a Bersa thunder 380cc, that is mild to shoot and fits some of my pockets easily. I love it. Reliable and easy to shoot 200 rounds in a range session. Still depending on the pants, it is sometimes too big for the pocket carry. There are many times where it is too big, and pocket carry is my only option. I have a naa mini that serves me well, but realistically I'd like a bigger round in the pocket.

So why heavy, well I like to practice, and light stuff makes me stop practicing. Had a Keltec p380, Ruger lcr, Keltec pf9. Did not like any of them for some reason or other. Too light is often the issue. Also I really want a common caliber, 380 is what I'm really looking at. I reload and have everything for 380 or 9mm. Trying to avoid 32acp if I can.

NAA makes the guardian in 380, but what other options are out there. I have found that I really do not mind a heavy amount of weight in my pocket. I tried carrying 30 oz of shot in my pocket for a day, and did not mind it at all.

Thanks for your advice all.

God bless,
Ryo

Wow!
Just Wow!!

Most humans find 20 oz about the upper limit for all day pocket carry!!

You must be one fine specimen!!

I'd look at an all steel J-Frame S&W, or a Walther PPK/s for weights in the 20 oz range.

30 oz?
Might as well carry a small Glock, or a 1911 compact, something.

Ruger sp101 should fit you bill then. I have the DAO version and tried to pocket carry it once....ONCE. way too heavy to carry that way for me. I ended up going IWB with it.

The Walther PPK or PPK/S pistols should fill the bill. Quite small and yet still heavy due to the all-steel construction.

Sig P290

Length 5.5"
Height 3.9"
Width.9"
Weight 20.5oz
6+1 9mm

It is a small gun but heavy for its size. handles recoil nicely. I enjoy shooting mine. I have had a Kel Tec P3AT, PF9, P11, Ruger LCP, Taurus TCP, MPA Protector (seacamp clone) and I find the recoil in the P290 much lower.

Here it is next to the ever popular pocket pistol the Ruger LCP 380

Carry some steel designd to be carried, like a Colt 1903 or a PPK, Ortigies .........something made with steel, there ya go, itll last for your greatest grand kids to boot.

Original steel frame Colt Mustang should fit the bill. 18oz. empty, and a pleasure to shoot.

Another vote for the SIG P290RS, very pleasant to shoot w/115's and no manual safety to worry about manipulating under stress.

The Sig P238 can be had in a steel frame. Its a great little .380 that will shoot wonderfully at the range. Very soft recoil. I have the aluminum frame version, and its a really pleasant pistol to shoot a couple hundred rounds through at a time. If you look at Sigs websight, and compare models, you will see some in steel, and some in aluminum.

Beretta Nano - 20oz w/empty mag. Some might consider it a little on the heavy side for pocket carry so it should suit you just fine. The heft it gives makes it an easy shooter.

I love mine, however I'm selling it because I need cash to fund another project. Don't know where you're located but if in S.C. send me a PM.

A Colt Mustang or a SIG P-238 both have some heft to them, are fun to shoot, and are great for extended range sessions.

I carried a G27 in a DeSantis Nemesis for years. It worked fine with trousers and dress slacks, which is what I wear most. Did not work for jeans, but I had a good IWB for that. My nephew fell in love with the gun, so I gave it to him when he graduated and joined the military.

Carrying a full sized G22 mag in the off pocket balanced the weight. I found the finger extensions for the baby Glock made pocket carry difficult to impossible. The weight and size was no big deal. If you are a big guy, you will have big pockets. I'm 6'1" and 240.

A couple more pairs of pants with big enough pockets are likely cheaper than another gun.

Then too, I highly doubt that pocket carry is truly your only option. Look at some of the tuckable inside the waistband holsters. Lots of folks carry G19s or 1911s that way, so a bersa shouldn't be too much trouble.

A tuckable holster and a good belt should run in the neighborhood of $140-200, and you'll get a faster presentation starting from anywhere except with your hand already on the gun, and I can pretty much guarantee that you'll be more comfortable than with close to two pounds of metal bouncing around in your pocket.

That's just my advice, of course, and it's not binding. If you're set on buying another gun that you "need," to replace one that you "love," because it's your "only option," I'm sure you'll do just that.

In that case, try a Springer EMP9, or a SIG 938, both in 9MM, or a SIG 238 if you really want a .380.

My pocket gun is a Polish P64. The caliber is 9X18 Makarov, which is half-way between a .380ACP and a 9MM Luger. All steel. Size is almost identical to a PPK. 6 round magazine. I bobbed the pinky extension off the magazine and it's every bit as "pocketable" as a S&W 642. Mine is hard-chromed and I carry it in a Robert Mika pocket holster. Great little gun.

Get a Kahr Mk9. Smaller than the Bersa CC and over 20 oz. 9mm.

For a .380, the suggestion for the steel-framed Sig P238HD is a good one. A bit over 20 oz and smaller than your Bersa.

I've owned the Bersa CC and surprisingly even a PPK/S is slightly smaller. A PPK is considerably smaller. An SP101 is considerably bigger.

Glock G36 gives you .45 ACP power
Glock 26 gives you 11 rounds of 9mm
S&W steel revolvers can give you 5 rounds of 38+P or even 357

Personally, I find the revolver, while lower in capacity, to actually conceal better due to its rounded shape (just like us humans)

Wow, thank you everyone for the replies. In the past I carried a ton of junk in my pockets mostly for work. 3 loaded keyrings in one pocket so I got used to the weight (till I found some of those belt clips to hold them.

I do have a nice gunbelt that holds the weight well. At times I do carry iwb, but when I can do that I often have a bigger gun. Did not realize there were so many options in this size + weight range. I admit I'll be googling many of these tonight to compare their sizes. I don't think I'll go with a revolver. Had some and they just do not conceal as well on me.

Anyway thank you everyone for the advice. Very much appreciated.

I myself dislike airweights so my routine pocket gun is a stainless steel 357 magnum S&W model 649-3. Most people think that this is too heavy for pocket carry but I carry it just fine.

Here's one to spark debate... Bond arms makes a 20oz. And up. Granted only two shots but almost any caliber. Enjoy mine but the lcp is weightless in comparison. Have carried it in 410/45lc, and 38/357 and it will handle recoil amazingly well. If I could only have one gun, it wouldn't be it but I'll never sell it either. Great truck gun and "snake killer". Good shooting
