Help deciding next BP revolver purchase

The Ruger Old Army is THE gun. You can find 'em for that on gunbroker.com occasionally, but they're not in production anymore and the price is going up it seems. I had a stainless, got stolen. I now have a carbon steel one. These guns are as accurate as black powder revolvers get and tough as nails. They're not "authentic, but for shooting, they're the best IMHO.

I have a Pietta 51 navy. It's not THAT accurate, but is fun to shoot and the spare cylinders were a lot less than ROA cylinders. It's a brasser, though, not a stainless gun.

You folks are likely tired of hearing about my ROA but it has brought me back into the shooting sport. I was gone for at least 15 years. I've always admired the ROA and when it came out in 5-1/2", even more so. When I realized they were no longer being made I just had to find one. It was the first firearm I'd bought in over 15 years. The fact I could mail order it made finding one pretty easy.

I'm of the opinion that anything worth doing is worth doing to excess. In addition to the mods I've mentioned. I've also bought a Kirst conversion in 45 LC. A Belt Mountain pin and a lower priced leather holster rig...and am going to my first SASS shoot this weekend.

The only regret? That I could never find a 5-1/2" Stainless ROA with adjustable sights. I saw one picture of the adjustable sight model but I've never been able to find one. I can't even find production numbers. Also I missed out on buying a Classicballistx cylinder. I want a spare cylinder or two and if for no other reason than it doesn't have the rolled in "Black powder only" scribbled around it.

I thought it would be a problem having fixed sights, considering all the odd ball loads I intended to play with. I've posted this before but it still befuddles me. At 25 yards it shoots dead on...no matter what I load it with. 150 gr RB, 150 gr BigLube, 210 gr Bigube, 200 gr BigLube HP (Used HP jig), 25, 30, 35 or 40 gr of Triple 7, clean shot. Pyrodex, RWS, Winchester or Remington caps. Nothing makes a difference on the point of impact. It is truly bizarre....and I love it.

Anyone have a Classicbalistx cylinder they wish to part with? I need one...

I ordered the stainless model.
Who knows, I may get a Ruger at a gun chow, I go quite often and have seen them.
I will post some pics when it comes. BTW. I have never use any felt or wads, is there a problem with that? Also I have a Navy model that does not have the top strap I would be willing to part with if anyone is interested. It is in very good condition with no rust.
How long can I wait till I clean the stainless without having any problems? A couple days? I only use black powder.
Would I be able to use a conversion cylinder in this?

I have never use any felt or wads, is there a problem with that? No problem with that. Some people like to use wads, some use grease/goop/lube/wax/Crisco/etc. over the ball. Either works to lube the cylinder, reduce fouling in the barrel, and prevent chainfires. IMNSHO, lubed wads are the easiest and cleanest way to go. They cost a little more than grease/etc. but if you make your own, the cost is negligible.
How long can I wait till I clean the stainless without having any problems? A couple days? I only use black powder. After a match or shooting session, I spray the barrels & cylinders of my revolvers down with Balistol and let it work on disolving the fouling. Usually let them sit for two or three days before I get around to cleaning them. I have let them sit for as long as two weeks with no rust or adverse results. Would I be able to use a conversion cylinder in this? Yes, R&D make a stainless conversion cylinder for the Pietta stainless '58

Fingers

Since I cast BigLube bullets I lube the bullet in a sizer and that takes care of it all. The downside of using bullets is that you really need a loading stand. You can load it with the ram but as the British, it's very fiddly. The 150's take up the same space as RB.

I also use Ballistol. I just spray it down and let it sit a bit. It comes clean in only one or two passes.

I don't know what they put in Ballistol but it STINKS!....so I recommend that you don't use it in the house.

So the wad goes over the powder and can be used instead of grease over the ball? It seems like it might not be as messy as putting grease over the ball like I have always done

That's accurate. Whenever I use RB I use Oxyoke wonder Wads between the powder and the ball.

Well, I own a Remington (Pietta) 1858 New Model Army .44 in stainless steel. (fixed sights).I don't carry it because I'm partial to blued steel but a few years ago when I let that little girl at Cabela's talk me into buying it, I shot it 6 times, then cleaned it and put it up. I take it out of the nylon case that came with it about every month or so and wipe a little fresh lubricant on it and then put it away again. The best I remember it cycled good, and shot the cylinder empty in a very satisfactory manner. The fit and finish of the revolver is outstanding....

Coppermouse, if you're using real black, even with stainless, it's best to clean the same day or the next at the latest. B/p residue absorbs moisture from the atmosphere and is corrosive, even to stainless. The good news is ordinary soap and water are the best cleaner, followed by a good drying and light coat of vegetable oil, I use spray Pam or equal. Conversion cylinders work fine in all except the brass frame guns.

I just bought roa last week and I love it. Went to the range and it is a ccurate. I never thought I would like one but now I am a believer! I still love my colt replicas to they just feel so good.
I am new here my 2nd post I will post some pics of my guns soon if y'all will give me some feedback. I just took the bluing off of a 1851 and polished it. I got the idea from another thread on this forum and his method works great!

Not going to age this one maybe another this one turned out so darn pretty! I am trying to put up pictures but can't seem to do it. I'm am using a iPhone with the pics on it but having trouble. I will figure it out.

Just post your pics on Photobucket.com. It's free. Then all you have to do is click the
insertimage.gif
button while composing your post and include the link to the pic in Photobucket.

Got the Remmie

:)
I won a Remmie .44 Army Stainless for $225. On Gun Broker. Plus an additional $25. for shipping. An excellent addition to my collection.

Never been fired. Anyway I'm know more when I get her. The guy didn't do a reserve and started at $225.00. I got lucky.

I've been trying to get a Ruger Old Army but.... those guys play for blood over there. I missed one for $370.00 because I got busy, with a deal in Charleston. My fault, I should have gone buy now. Have a look at the listings. ROAs are hot right now. I want to get one and that should hold me for a while.:D Yeah right...

Just pay it and don't look back. I paid full monte for mine and trust me, I never do that and have never regretted it. I have it, I shoot it....a few bucks wasn't going to keep me from it.
