Hey, my dad and I were trying to field strip his SW Model 39-2 (9mm) to change the recoil springs, but couldn't figure out how.

We removed the little pin near the trigger and pulled the piece out, but we were stumped from there. So can anyone give detailed instructions on how to strip a 39-2 to change a recoil spring?

Help is much appreciated, thanks!

Sounds like you just about have it.

I explain how to field strip a 5904. The procedure is the same until you get to step # 15. The 39-2 has a barrel bushing that needs removed before you remove the barrel. The bushing is on the end of the slide. It will turn about 1/4 of the way and then you can pull it out. If your 39-2 hasn't been cleaned for a while or it hasn't been fired much the bushing may be a bit snug. Just wiggle it a bit and it will come out. One you have the bushing removed then follow the remainder.
Make sure the safety is in the fire position so it will clear the grips as the slide is removed.
The 39 was my first issued duty gun and still one of my all time favorites.

You can also view/download the manual that shows generic centerfire auto take down on the S&W site.
