hers an unbiased recommendation:
I havent owned a Sig, Beretta, or a Walther....
Id get the Sig..
why? only cause its the most commended pistol of all the armed professionals I know, Including my older brother, retired USN SEAL.

do you see the irony here?
if you wanna go with armed pro, why not just go with MK23? :D

I just did the same research and decided on the CZ-75B Compact, all steel, holds 15 rounds, manual safety, plus I bought the Kadet .22 conversion kit for cheap target shooting. I pick it up tommorrow and my trigger finger is getting twitchy. Mike Z

One that is definatly worth a look is the FN FNP.Da/Sa,ambi decocker, great reliability. One other advantage over may other polimer framed guns:ALL frame components are replacable incl.frame rails.Allows for the possibilty of a Full rebuild later down the road.
Those H-P Detectives are know to be proplematic. My FN h-p ran flawlessly.Just did not care for the trigger.Too well entrenched with 1911's.

I recommend the Walther P99/AS... The AS (Anti-stress) is the traditional DA/SA + long trigger/striker pull SA. I don't recommend the QA, (DAO/Glocktype), but that's just me. Also, the P99 seems better in 9mm as opposed to 40cal. But I like 9's anyway.

Compact or full size, not much difference, as the photo indicates. You get 5 more rounds capacity in the larger P99/AS.

Pistols I own or have owned: Taurus PT92, Glock 26, Star BM, Bersa Thunder 9/UC, KelTec P11, Tokarev, S&W 3913, Browning BDA & Browning HP, Ballister Molina, Sig P220 & P239.

Of all of the above only the two Sig's have been as good as my Walther P99's.. Even then, as an overall package, the Walthers IMO are the pick of the litter.

I don't think you can go wrong with any of the modern hi quality firearms.. I hear mostly good things about Sigs/H&K's/CZ's/Glocks,and such.. I'm down on Beretta Customer Service, for past services NOT rendered, but the pistols, unless you need warranty work are excellent. I think the secret is to try and hold, and if possible shoot the pistols you have an interest in.

Until you actually hold and fire a weapon you can't know how the grip feels in YOUR hands.. Or how you like the way the safety's, de-cockers, mag release, sights, etc. will work for you... I think good pistols will be reliable and accurate.. It's just that some will be MORE reliable and MORE accurate, for you, than some others.

For example, some folks knock KelTec's as being unreliable.. I've had a P11 and P32 for years. So far both have been 100% reliable. Having said that, I prefer my Sig P239 w/CT grips or my Walther P99c/AS over the KelTec because I honestly think both of them will be functioning prefectly a long time after the KelTec is worn out.. Of course I paid over twice as much for the Sig & Walther as the KelTec, so that's a factor.

I think if you carry a lot and shoot a little a KelTec P11 is in 9mm an excellent firearms bargain. If you run, say, 200 rds thru a P11 without a problem I say load 'er up with a high quality self defense round and you are good to go.. If you are planning on shooting thousands of rounds thru it, you are fooling yourself. The KelTec's IMO fit a nice little nitch, but that nitch doesn't involve long duration, high rd. use. As long as you understand it's limits I think the KelTec P11 is a very nice cc pistol.

Over a decade of use my Sig P239 has NEVER balked once.. It is very accurate, and I have complete confidence in it.. If it weren't for the "details" the Walther P99 offers it would still be at the top of my list.

I just like the grip ergonomics of the Walthers.. I like the location of the de-cocker better.. I like the dual mag release location better, (I'm a lefty). I like the red "cocked" indicator, and the red "chamber loaded" indicator the Sig doesn't offer. And without a doubt both of my P99's have been the most accurate, out of the box, firearms I've ever owned.

Try 'em all, and buy what you like. I hope you will give the Walther P99's a chance tho, as they fantastic.

Somebody at Walther Headquarters should be axed for doing such a terrible job of marketing the Walther P99 series of pistols in America. You can check out what Walther P99 owners think of the pistols on www.walterforums.com, or www.handgunforum.net (Walther sub-section).

Best Wishes,

Here is another thread where everyone recommends the gun they own or want to own.

Here is how to choose any gun.

1.Read all the posts here.
2.Completely ignore everyones opinion.
3. Go to a range that rents a large selection of pistols with different actions and construction. (or come shoot with me:) )
4. Handle them.
5. Shoot the ones that feel best in your hand.
6. Shoot the others.
7. Purchase the one you shoot the best.
8. Shoot that gun until you find one you can shoot better.

The bottom line is that all the major manufacturers of handguns make an acceptable product and they all have lemons slip through.

FIND THE GUN THAT FITS YOU bestest.

...my $.02

I'll second that. The only way to decide if a firearm is for you is to try it out. Any of the guns listed in the previous posts is a quality firearm. Some might have better fit and finish, while some might represent better dollar values. It's personal choice. Try as many as you can at the range.

FN Herstal, FNP-9

1000 rds, not a single malf/failure

Awsome gun.

Walther, CZ 75B or variant thereof, or FNP.

I'd skip the other over-priced plastic.

I've heard a lot of good things about the FNP-9. It's less expensive than it's Browning counterpart and it's made right here in the USA.

9 mm choices

I have both Sig 226 and Beretta 92 FS Inox (stainless steel).

Both are very good 9 mm.

When I get ready to go to the range I am happy to take either.

I have just purchased a NIB SandW 5906. It is a very well made gun, but
it is heavier than the other two. Good deals can be found on used Sig 226,
Beretta 92 FS and SandW 5906.

Glock or XD

Glock 17
Glock 19
XD9

I like the following Sigs too:
Sig 226
Sig 229

All of them have a very good reputation.

I own and shoot the following which have been very reliable:
DA/SA - S&W-99; S&W 5906; S&E 659; Sig 226; CZ-75
DAO - PO18-9LDA; Walther P-99QA

The S&W99 & Walther P99QA were surprisingly accurate for a short barrel pistol with excellent ergonomics.
