I recently bought a 1955 Springfield M1 Garand 5.8xx-xxx...

attachment.php

it is in beautiful condition... (TE=2.1 MW=<1) no rebuild marks... date on barrel matches manufacture of receiver...

only problem is, the Bolt and the Trigger Assembly... are both completely H&R parts...

I am interested in CORRECTIFYING my M1...

what do I need to know about the correct Bolt and Trigger Assy Heat Lot #s and serial #s before I buy any replacement parts???

i believe i have the original barrel as that is what i was told... and the matching years on bbl and receiver... no rebuild marks... and probably the original stock as well... it has a strong DAS cartouche and circle P stamp and although it has some small dings it is otherwise solid as a rock.

does anyone have any serious advice on whether correcting these mis matches is even worth it on my M1????

the H&R Trigger group appears brand new.

I may be willing to trade Trigger Groups or Bolts with somebody if theirs are totally cherry condition as mine are...

you M1 veterans out there please guide me...

making a correct grade M1 that has proper headspace, with all parts in good condition is an unnecessary money pit.

If it shoots well as it is, leave it.

You should be able to find someone with a SA trigger group willing to trade straight across for your H&R if you so desire. I would not be trading out bolts without a headspace gauge if I were you.
There is no monetary reason to trade either one unless it makes you happy as the H&R pieces are worth no more than equivalent SA parts except to a dedicated collector.
By the way, nice gun, by the looks of it.

There's more to it than just having all the parts show the same manufacturer too. You don't want a 1945 bolt in a 1952 receiver right?

It's not worth chasing to do a rebuild. If it shoots nice, enjoy.

If you want museum perfection, it's gonna cost you.

"Correct" is a loathesome frankenstein'ing and humping of an otherwise serviceable rifle in the name of forgery and false authenticity.

It's also ridiculously expensive.

I recently got a H&R SG with a new SA bolt (which would be correct for your rifle) and a SA trigger group (the finish on the trigger guard is worn) which would also be correct for your rifle. If I lived closer where we could both check headspace on the bolts (they probably will work okay) I'd consider trading.

I bought my M1s to shoot and am not particularly interested in having a correct M1.

You ned to get Scott Duff's book (available from CMP) to make sure you have the correct oprod and other parts.

wow... you guys have answered my questions and simultaneously made me feel better about the mixed parts on my garand...

thanks for the great info...

its better than what i wanted to hear, especially considering the quality of the parts...

Vaarok's statement really makes me think

The CMP forum is full of people swapping parts back and forth.

You will need to have the headspace checked on any bolt though.
