Help me decide between a shotgun or a pistol.

I need help deciding my next firearm purchase. I have 2 pistols, a 9mm XD standard and a 22 buckmark. I'm debating on buying a shotgun, mossberg 500 or remington 870, or a 9mm bersa thunder. I like these choice because I think they offer good bang for my buck. Given what I have, what do you think would be a better addition for home defense.

Get the shotgun, either the 870 or the 500- both fine weapons. Why buy a Bersa 9mm when you already have an XD 9? The XD is a much better gun than the Bersa and a 12ga is arguably the consumate HD weapon.
 
Get the Taurus "Judge' .410 shotgun, and .45 Long Colt in one gun. Get the 6"barrel in SS and start shooting sporting clays, and cowboy action shooting with the same gun! Seriously, it makes a good all round defense gun.
 
My inclination towards the Bersa is that I would stay in the same caliber I already have. Second, it's a pretty sexy gun and feels great in my hand. However, common sense tells me I ought to go for the shotgun.
 
A good pump gun is always nice to have around. I agree with VegasOPM, get the shotgun and expand the collection a bit. Perfect for HD and a lot of fun with light game loads, and still pretty cheap to shoot.

870 or Mossberg. I especially like the Mossy with the strike bezel on the end of the barrell. I've just recently seen these at a couple of gun shops. Of course my recommendation assumes you are looking for an HD gun. You already have a fine ccw and a fine target so why not a big boomstick with a pointy end to jab with.
 
you don't have a shotgun and that is a necessity, get the 870, that is what i got, many rds through it and it is running strong.
 
Either make of shotgun is versatile and high quality. Far more versatile than any 9mm pistol. Change the barrel or choke and the ammo and you can hunt different game, target shoot and still have an HD gun.
 
Handle the 500 and the 870. Pick the one that fits you best. Resist the urge to hang a bunch of useless crap on it (or put a PGO stock on it because it looks cool on tha interwebz) and run lots of lead through it.

"...Resist the urge to hang a bunch of useless crap on it..." Geezuz, yes. Well put rantingredneck. No pistol grips only either. The most useless thing on Earth is a shotgun with no stock. Except for a rifle with no or folding stock. A stock with a pistol grip isn't the same thing, but they do limit the versatilty of a shotgun.
 
Another vote for the shotgun here, especially if you take it out and shoot some clays. Some of the most fun you can have with a gun.

So, how well did you do at sporting clays with it?
