S&W sd9, ruger p89/sr9/9c/9e, lots of good cz clones, a used 3rd gen glock 17/19 and many more

I wouldn't trust a 1911 as a low-maintenance gun. I'd use a Glock or other modern poly for that.

That said, if you're fixed on a 1911, my basic Rock Island Armory GI is super basic and not sexy, but so far it does work perfectly, including with hollowpoints.

Seriously? While I appreciate the enthusiasm, none of those are remotely what I said I was looking for.

9mm, Hammer fired, more than 15 rds, DA capability, less than $400.
That's the pistol I'm looking for. I'm not going to change my mind. I put a lot of thought into that list.

To fill in a little, handguns I already own that I am not using for this application: 3 1911's, 2 Hi-Powers, Sig 2022, M&P 45, Sig 238, Walther PPS, USP .40, Beretta 92, Colt 1903, Remington model 51, Glock 19, Ruger GP-100, Desert Eagle, Webley MkV, Smith 626, Enfield No2 Mk1, FN 1910, Ruger New Model Blackhawk, Remington 1858 repro...... there's some more, but I honestly don't remember them all.

There are many good handguns in this world, but the list of features I'm looking for are what I'm looking for. If I was looking for something else, I would have been less specific in my list.

To all that have given me ideas, thanks. If anyone knows of one I've overlooked that fits the requirements I'd love a heads up. The next glock suggestion will make me question US public school's reading comprehension curriculum.

Honestly, I'm leaning towards the RIA because I want to have and play with a CZ-75 derivative, but cheaply. Maybe I'll find a used P-07/09 cheap. I'm gonna cruise some gun stores today. Maybe I'll find a 3rd Gen Smith. I had one before and sold it for reasons that escape me now. Didn't like the safety, but just never used it.

Wait, what? Who said 1911?

Great thing about those is it's the only way to get a new, steel "small" frame Tanfoglio anymore.

I also like the parked finish

It's amazing what you find when you're looking for something else.

A buddy texted me that a pawn shop near him has a 5 or so police trade in Smith's, so I headed over there on my rounds. He did have a bunch of 5906's, pretty beat up, one mag each for $360. While I was hemming and hawing he mentioned he had a "foreign plastic 9mm that had just come in". Behold, a LNIB FNX-9 with three mags. He wanted $425 for it, so I stretched the budget that far. :D:D Bless folks that don't bother to research the value of what they're selling. Seriously this thing doesn't have 50 rounds through it.

Thanks to the folks that gave me some ideas, and I still need to scratch that CZ (ish) itch. Maybe next time.

I have a Hi-Power with a new hammer and sear, a Beretta with new laser grips, and a new FNX. Looks like tomorrow will be a 9mm range day.

Ruger SR9c fits all requirements. Plus, no 9mm has proven to be more accurate or reliable. Plus, you get adjustable sights. Magazines of 10 rounds and 17 rounds. Drag it around on a string attached to your truck bumper for a couple of months and it will still work.

This thread has a poll that asks "Rock Island, Taurus, or Other"

Since I'm only aware of RIA making 1911s, I figured that was what we were talking about.

Ah, I see. No RIA makes a CZ/Tanfoglio clone as well as a couple revolvers. And some rifles I think.

I lurvs me some 1911's. My main CCW is a Dan Wesson, but yeah, not exactly "a throw it in a bag and forget about it" gun.

I'm pretty psyched that I got an FNX that cheap. Looking forward to shooting it.

Every time a thread of "I need these features in a gun" pops up, I feel like banging my head on my desk. Because there are always firearms suggested that don't meet the criteria.

So a hammer fired, ambi 1911(down for fire) safety, 9mm, 15+1 capacity under $400 firearm...honestly I can't think of any that meet all of those. The only firearm that comes to mind is Ruger P series (such as the P95) but those have inverted (Walther) safeties where up is fire and down is safe. Easy to find for under $400 though.

You and me both, Brother. But some good suggestions also follow.

Well then you're in the right thread. Just from this thread:
RIA MAP1/MAPP
Taurus PT92
Bersa Thunder Pro 9
CZ999
K100 Mk7
EAA Witness P

Hi there, policeman here...I highly recommend the Glock 19. It's a great combat pistol. I carried one the entire time I worked undercover. Plus, off duty too. Recently, I switched to the Glock 21 (.45 ACP) for a duty pistol. But, I still carry a Glock 19 (generation 4) for off duty -- they are a workhorse of a pistol. Not too pretty - but guaranteed to always go "BANG!"

Does your Glock 19 have a hammer?

Seconds on the CZ P07 Duty. Meets all criteria (comes with either de-cocker or safety) and two mags. Shoots dead accurate out of the box and can be had for $400 if you look around, less for used.
