I am fairly new here. Been looking around a while and decided to ask for some help. I am in the market for a new 9mm.

Here are the features that I am hoping to find:

Reliable and user friendly
Medium or compact frame
Mag capacity at least 10 rounds, more prefered
DA/SA with decocker or safety, prefer frame mounted
Ambi controls because I am left handed
Priced around $400.00- not more than $450.00

Frame material doesn't matter as long as it is as durable and corrosion resistent as possible. Live in Alabama where it gets very HOT during summer.

I have owned Ruger P95, Star Ultrastar, Bersa .380, and S&W 4506. All of these are DA/SA so I am used to this type of pistol and would like to get another DA/SA if I can find what I am looking for.

I'll bet dollars-to-doughnuts that the CZ ends up being the most recommended firearm for this topic. So, to give you a head-start, here's the webpage showing CZ USA's fine line of product offerings:

www.czusa.com

CZ gets a ton of good word-of-mouth on this board. I'm resisting, but my willpower is fading fast.

A month ago, I wouldn't have suggested this. After shooting my son's Ruger p95 a few weeks ago, I was impressed. Have since bought a P90 (.45) and last Saturday, I bought this:

http://www.ruger-firearms.com/Firearms/FAProdView?model=13010&return=Y

Picture shows the model with a decocker and safety. Mine is just the decocker. It's Ruger's current version of the P95. Light rail, 15-round magazines, compact design (about like my Sig 239), ambi controls, and they've changed their frame from looking/feeling like a buttered tire to a matte finish with molded-in texturing in the grip area for a nice secure hold. Built like a tank, accurate, and reliable. They're actually not ugly any more. I gave $380 for the only one I could locate in my neck of the woods and they're probably cheaper than that at a gunshow.

I'm going to second the CZ, check out the PCR or the P01 both are decockers and are compacts. THey hold 14+1 and despite the decocker being on only one side, it isn't a hinderance (i'm left handed too)

You know the feel Ruger and S&W, try Sigsauer. In fact, I recently went to buy a new 9mm S&W auto. Ended up with a used Sig P229 instead. Can carry 13 or 10 rounds. Very durable. A tank! Or, look at Beretta. Not sure if it has a decocker.

CZ PCR

Kartracer was over to my place last sunday with his new CZ PCR. The first mag thru it was the best I shot all afternoon. Now I'm sorta thinking I have to have one. :D

I agree. My main carry gun is a P97 but I've shot my friends P95 quite a bit. It will be my next 9MM.

For that price range, go with the CPO (certified pre owned) Sigs.

Check; while other brands may equal the Sig's reliability, no one beats it. As for user friendly as long as the gun 'feels' right, every control will be right where you expect it. Some people don't like the feel of the Sigs. YMMV

Medium or compact frame
The P228/P229,sig pros (medium) or P239 (compact) or (if you can find one) a P225 (medium) all work.

The P239 extended mag holds 10, the P229 series hold 13 standard

No safety on the Sigs; they're drop-safe.

This is the toughy. The magazine release is reversable. The decocker is not. However a great many lefties have no problems operating the Sig decocker. I'm a righty, so I don't know much about it. :)

This is another toughy, but as I said you should be able to find CPO Sigs in this range. Or go to CDNN and get their LEO turn ins.

Pick your finish. I like the Nitron which is corrosion resistant and durable. The sig pros are polymer; I've handled them (nice feel) but don't have any shooting experience with them.

Needless to say, I'm partial to the Sigs. :) I own a P226 & P239 and have fired the P220, P228, P229, P245. Their DA/SA action is fantastic, they're extremely accurate, and they'll feed damn near any ammo you can fit in the magazine. I've also fired or at least handled most of the other autos on the market. For my money there's nothing like a Sig. :)

Those were almost the exact features i was looking for and i went with the new style p95 which is on layaway, i will pick it up next month. I got 1000rds in the closet just waiting to take it out, i can't wait. It has the ambi mag release, even though i am right handed i still use my right finger to drop the magazine. you can get it with a decoker only or safety and deckocer. pretty decent size frame an light weight, durable and reliable and very much user friendly, and they are at a good price.15 +1 capacity I paid $379 out the door and i paid to much, but around here there ain't many places to choose from, without driving far east or west.

Sounds like he already had a P95, and therefore doesn't want another one.

I think the CZ-75 is a good choice to look at, though in the end I picked up a 'clone' of that model - a Baby Eagle 9MM (which doesn't fit all the criteria due to the slide mounted safety).

Thanks for the replies so far. I got rid of my P95 because it was just too big for me to comfortably carry it concealed. I also didn't like the mag release setup.

Are the new P95's any smaller/slimmer than the old one's? I noticed that they have the same mag release too.

I have been looking at the CZ line. Does the RAMI come with ambi controls? I know that this is more of a sub compact, but I like it's looks. What about the polycoat finish on the CZ's? Is it very durable?

I have also seen the FNP 9. Any info on this pistol?

I would really rather have a new pistol. I am not interested in police trade-ins.

I'd say one of CDNN's pre owned Sig 226s or a new CZ-75 ought to fit your bill nicely.

You owe it to yourself to check out the Walther P99. However, you'll have to look for the AS trigger configuration to get the DA/SA. Walther is only importing the QA now, which is a partially cocked striker. Same trigger pull on each shot. THe P99 is a great gun. I love mine. Carries 15 rounds in the mag.

Get the CZ PCR or it's counterpart the P01. I have the PCR, the Sigs P239 and
the P229. The sigs are great guns but are also thicker and heavier. You said you want nib which means the Sigs will not be in your price range.
The CZ PCR is an alloy frame, is slimmer, lighter, has a very durable finish and is
in your $400. price range. Also, it is a natural pointer, accurate and it feels great in the hand. Just go to a dealer and hold it, you will see what I mean!
Still one of the best values on the market.

Another +1 for the CZ P01. Meets all of your criteria and had to pass the toughest test regimen I've ever seen before it was adopted by the Czechs. It met every spec, and surpassed most of them by a wide margin. In these parts it is often substantially discounted from MSRP, which makes it an even better deal.

Have you considered another Bersa?

I'm very happy with my full-size Thunder 9. 17+1 rounds. Reasonable weight. Just under $400. Shoots better than I do...

A few years ago I went into a Montgomery gun shop and picked up a CZ 75. It felt like it was made for my hand! I don't remember what I was looking for at that time, or if I even bought a gun then. But, I do want to try a CZ out the next time I go to the range.

Does the CZ 75/CZ 75 Compact have only a safety lever? If so, do you just let the hammer down with your thumb?

I haven't seen any replies about the FNP 9. Anybody got any info or experience with this pistol?

I went to the range today. Outdoors. Had some 50' targets at 50', and some 8" targets at 25 yards. My P-01 goes with me everywhere, but doesn't get as much range time as some of the other games guns.

Had some new Hornady reloads. 124 Hp XTPs. Two magazines at the 50' target, 18 rounds in the black. 20 rounds at the 8" 25 yd, 20 in the circle, most inside 5". I was pleased. It was not quite as tight as the 226. I don't shoot it as much as the Sig 226 Stainless Stock. Not as heavy, not quite as good a trigger. 1/3 the cost.

I had some Berry's 124 gr RN with a lighter load. These were shooting a bit higher than the Hornadys. Not as good groups. The round nose were working great in the Sig.

Pretty much exactly what I had in mind.

Except the poster asked for a compact/medium so I'm gonna go ahead and suggest the P228.

But seriously, if I didn't already have a 226, I'd definitely really look into the P225. :)
