I'm thinking about replacing my 54 caliber TC Hawken with something that is easier to lug around the woods. I've looked and it'll probably be a 50 caliber, most seem to be made that way. I'd need to keep this inexpensive (no job) - are the guns Cabela's sells by CVA 209 Magnum (24 inch 1 in 28" twist barrel, 50 cal, and fiber optic sights for $119) or the New Frontier (24 inch 1 in 28" twist, 50 cal, break open action for $149) good rifles? These are both in my price range once I sell the Hawken. Locally I'm restricted to whatever Walmart carries and I confess I haven't looked yet at what they offer. Does anyone have one of their rifles? Happy with it? I'm open to other suggestions too. I like the look of the CVA rifle in the catalog, it appears to have a safety in a place I'm used to, I don't know how (or if) these break open guns deal with a safety.

Well, you can't beat in-lines with a synthetic stock and no hardware (patchbox, huge sideplate or buttplate).

BTW, the lightest jager I've seen had a wood trigger guard, no buttplate, no sideplate (looked like ebony was used where the screws went in to hold the lock in place). It was very short (perhaps 24" overall) and was a take-down (came apart mid-wrist) gun. Very light and good for poaching the Konig's deer.

I'd like to get an in-line. I hunted last week with a fellow that had, and once I lifted it I knew I was in love.

I have to agree with RCL. The Omega is a fine gun, although I'd definitely shell out a few more bucks for the stainless version. Yes, it's more money, but as in all things, you get what you pay for. I'll repeat my warnings about spanish made guns (with the exception of Austin-Halleck). These guns (CVA, New Frontier, which is a CVA clone, and Traditions) have some QA issues, and are routinely proofed at 100 grain loads, and the sold as 150 grain capable. Spend the dough and buy American.

I bought a TC Black Diamond yesterday - our local Wal Mart had a couple of their "packages" (gun and bunch of other stuff) for $170. Natchez has the same package for $270. I needed a gun that I could use with various ignition sources and this one has nipples for #11 caps, 209 shotgun primers and something I'd like to find but have never seen - musket caps. Here in Idaho when hunting in muzzle loader hunts I'm restricted to ignition sources that are flint, percussion cap or these musket caps (no shotgun primers allowed). It's a very nice rifle, great trigger (adjustable for sear engagement and over travel) - I didn't have to adjust it at all. Very nice fiber inserts in the sights and best of all it's light, the price was right and I think it's made in America.
So - does anyone know where I can find these "musket caps"? I read they're hotter than the #11's I've been using with my Hawken. I asked the kid running the register at Walmart, but he didn't know anything about them.
Given the "action" is open on this rifle, does anyone know of something better than the saran wrap I've been using with my Hawken to protect the cap in the rain/snow?

thanks...

Check here for the action cover.

Musket caps aren't really hotter but they do produce a higher volume of flame. Picking them up locally would be easist but I can't help you there. You would be able to order anything you need from Cabelas.

Check here for some interesting in-line reading and products. Cabelas sell their bullets also.
