I'm thinking about replacing my 54 caliber TC Hawken with something that is easier to lug around the woods. I've looked and it'll probably be a 50 caliber, most seem to be made that way. I'd need to keep this inexpensive (no job) - are the guns Cabela's sells by CVA 209 Magnum (24 inch 1 in 28" twist barrel, 50 cal, and fiber optic sights for $119) or the New Frontier (24 inch 1 in 28" twist, 50 cal, break open action for $149) good rifles? These are both in my price range once I sell the Hawken. Locally I'm restricted to whatever Walmart carries and I confess I haven't looked yet at what they offer. Does anyone have one of their rifles? Happy with it? I'm open to other suggestions too. I like the look of the CVA rifle in the catalog, it appears to have a safety in a place I'm used to, I don't know how (or if) these break open guns deal with a safety.
