Help requested - looking for firearms training

I am looking for firearms training and I was wondering if anyone has a recommendation for a school that will be teaching in the Sacramento area. I feel that quality education is better than learning on my own. Would you recommend reading books first or take a beginner NRA class? I have searched California based training institutes but no one to my knowledge are offering beginning or defensive handguns in my immediate area. Closest would be San Jose in March. Any help is appreciated. Thank you

Are there any gun stores near you? Quite often, firearm instructors will leave business cards at gun stores. For that matter, there are some gun stores that run their own firearm courses.

Any junior colleges or adult schools near you? Some of them have firearms-related training courses listed.

Does your local police agency have a reserve officer program? The training would be similar to what the full-time police trainees go through. Of course, don't sign up JUST to attend the training, then quit after you've graduated!

Also Jackson Arms in south san francisco has an instructor named Brian Normandy....he is great! take his class or call and ask him for an instructor in your area.
