Where to find firearm training?

Not sure this is the right place to put this, but....

I've touched a gun exactly one time in my life. I really want to learn how to clean, maintain, and shoot different types and get my CCW, but I don't personally know anyone who would be able to teach and I can't find any NRA trainers in this area. Google searches have prooved similarly fruitless.

I live in north Mississippi. Any suggestions for where I should look?

Kes,

Eventually we'll probably move this over to "Strategies and Tactics," which is where classes are discussed and reviewed, but for now I'll leave it in General so that a wider audience will see it.

So how 'bout it, people? Who do we know in Mississippi?

You think I should try calling the Highway Patrol (since they're the ones who issue the CCWs) and see if they keep lists of courses?

MS doesn't require any course to get a CCW, so I didn't think that they'd keep anything on file. I'll check. Thanks for the suggestion. :)

Training

First, let me say it's great you are seeking training.

There are quite a few excellent schools that will teach you what you need to know to get started in shooting.

Being in Mississippi, I would suggets you contact Rangemaster in Memphis. They have a great facility and excellent instructors. Tom Givens is among the top trainers in the U.S.

Texas Pistol Academy in the Dallas area also offers some top quality training at reasonable prices.

There are quite a few good schools... you will be delighted you decided to get training.

Unless it's too far to travel for you, I believe that John Shaw still has his school in the Memphis area. " Mid-South" was in the title, but my friend Al Z. Heimers seems to be visiting just now and I can't recall the exact name. Someone less decrepit out there can no doubt fill in the blank.

Reputation is first-rate, and the man is well thought of in professional circles.

The only outfit with whom I have first-hand experience would be a longer trip, but not out of "driving distance" IMO. The Chapman Academy is located just north of Columbia, MO and offers both three and five-day courses from Novice to Professional levels.

Highly recommended for both thoroughness and value.

Details and class schedules at: www.chapmanacademy.com

"Mid-South Institure of Self-Defense Shooting" it says on the shirt I just happen to be wearing. (MISS, as in MISSissippi, get it?)

Here's the website: http://www.weaponstraining.com/

Great ranges, and great training (so I've heard). I've shot 4 of their "Metal Mania" matches, and the range facilities and personnel I met there were world class. The guy who ran the range--hope he's still there--is Ross Sanders. Top notch guy. They train lots of SEALs and SpecOps types. At least two or three former SEALs on their staff, I think.

If I get the chance, this is where I'm going for my next training course. They shoot, and they shoot a lot.

Give 'em a shout, and check 'em out.

Some of those schools might be a little advanced if you have very little background in guns. I would recomend looking into a NRA Basic Pistol Course. They are usually around $75 and will cover everything you need to learn to get started. I would visit www.nra.com for more information.

Good Luck

Dont live there, but I do spend a lot of time in Tupelo, and will probably be relocating there (getting the hell out of The Peoples Republic of NW AR) soon. Tupelo itself doesnt have much in the way of shops, etc, but there is a nice gun club outside of Blue Springs, not sure if they do any training. Give em a call at (662) 869-7100 . Outside of that, I would look around the Memphis area for ranges and training. Rangemasters would be a good start.
Like I said, dont live there at the moment, but I used to, and still spend a lot of time there. So if you have any questions, e-mail me. [email protected]

From North Mississippi, Memphis isn't a bad haul.

Shaw's place is a good place to learn to shoot fast and accurate. Well worth doing.

Tom Givens [www.rangemaster.com] in Memphis provides some very good training and brings in a wide range of instructors as well.

Alan Brosnan [www.tees-training.com] is in the same sector of the world and he does some top-flight stuff as well.

Dave West [www.legionconsulting.com] is another very dialed in guy in the Memphis area.

In southern Mississippi, you may want to contact SouthNarc and see if he's doing anything. You will be very hardpressed to find a better teacher than he, at any price.

As I recall, John Hearne brings in a fair number of Modern Technique based trainers into central Mississippi on a pretty regular basis too.
