I'm trying to replace the trigger on a ruger standard, and the pivot pin won't come out. I haven't beaten on it yet because it looks like there is some sort of ring on it. I found this post

Hi, Trebor,

That business about easier disassembly was referring only to removal of the trigger pin. On the old models, the pin was held in by an E ring inside the frame. A special tool or a thin screwdriver was required to remove it and it was easily lost. Plus people who didn't know better tried to drive out the pin and bent the frame.

The Mk II uses a spring wire in a notch, which allows the pin to be tapped out and reinserted without a special tool.

The field stripping of the old and newer guns is identical and, IMHO, not that hard.

This is an e clip.

It will be on the pin in a grove. Use a strong light. It will have two little areas you can get a jewlers screwdriver in and flip it out. At work I use a modified button hook when they are hard to see in a tight spot. The later MKll will come out with a little taping with a punch and hammer.
If need be you can fashion a tool out of a thin screwdriver. File a U notch as wide as the pin then use it to push the clip off by pushing on the open side of the clip. Sort of like pushing the clip off while bypassing the pin. Putting it back on is harder.
Here are some tools for generic e clips.

I got it. but now I have a new problem. got the whole gun back together, slide pulled back fine, appropriate amount of tension but the hammer won't drop when I pull the trigger. if the hammer won't drop I can't take the silly thing back apart to see what's wrong. I am about to start cursing bill ruger.

I have a ruger standard, mk1, and mk2. and the standard is the only one with the e clip. FYI I bent it to get it out, then bent it back into shape to put it all back together.
