I've been thinking a bit more about my answer, and maybe I need to ignore what I actually own. Speaking in generalities might make it a bit easier (no emotional attachment). Also, to make my list easier, I may cut out rifles. I love rifles, but I never make it to the rifle range (it has been 3 or 4 years since I've last been to the rifle range). So, the only long guns I should consider for my short list should be pistol caliber which I can shoot at the pistol range (I can always replace/add regular rifles again later).

So, my re-thought list:

1) A .22lr rifle or pistol for teaching new shooters and for cheaper shooting (esp. important with current prices).

2) A 9mm for inexpensive centerfire training, a step up gun when teaching new shooters, and still have a decent defensive caliber.

3) A full sized .45 (preferably a 1911).

4) A mid-sized or compact .40 or .45 for CCW duties (in my case, when out of state).

5) A large framed, large bore revolver (.45LC preferably).

6) A medium framed .357mag. Versatile, fun, and you can use .38s when training new shooters on revolvers.

7) A small framed snub, preferably aluminum, for CCW/pocket carry.

8) A .357mag or .44mag lever rifle (I love lever rifles, tons of fun, and they'd be great for home defense).

9) Either another snub (.357mag or a 6 or 7 shot .38) or a small 9mm (maybe a Kahr PM9).

I currently have numbers 1-5 and I want 6-8. Nothing really fancy, but they all perform.

1. Remington 870
2. Savage Model 110 (.223)
3. Ruger 10/22
4. Sig P229 9mm
5. Beretta 390 12 gauge
6. Remington 700 (.308)
8. Winchester SX3 12 gauge
9. Winchester Model 70 (.06 or .270)

EXCELLENT choice on #7. Invisible ray gun. That's genius. ;)

Ok I'll play...

1) .22LR revolver
2) 9mm semi-auto pistol
3) .357 revolver
4) .45 semi-auto pistol
5) 9mm or .38sp 'pocket pistol'
6) .22LR bolt action rifle
7) .223 semi-auto rifle
8) .308 bolt action rifle
9) 12 gauge double

This would allow the use of pretty much every variety of the most popular / most common / cheapest ammunition available, and give you a go-to option for squirrel, elk, and everything in between (including plenty of options for two legged predators).

Wow, I must have been really tired in my earlier response to this thread. What I meant was I have 1-5 and I want 6-9. Number 7 should read Glock 19

I've been resisting this because I don't own 9 guns now and probably never will.
I'm a minimalist because I'm very mobile, don't want to deal with all the mass,
and prefer to have fewer guns so that I shoot them more and am proficient.

But I'll play what if. I wonder if I'll even be able to name 9 that I'd want. Let's see.

In approximate order of priority:

1) Marlin 336 .30-30
2) Marlin 39A .22
3) SW 642 or 442 .38 spl
4) SW 65 in .357 mag
5) Ruger Single Six or .22 LR pistol (probably Buckmark)
6) Ruger Blackhawk in .45 Colt (could replace the 65)
7) Marlin 1895 .45-70
8) 20 ga SxS or O/U. (Lean towards Stoeger Condor Outback)
9) Bolt rifle for long range; probably 7mm08 or .308.

Add an assortment of blades and sticks, I'm good to go.
