I've got a used Contender (not G2) handgun that was sitting around and I never tried it as a handgun. I recently put a buttstock and carbine barrel on it. Lots of fun. However, there is a slight problem I need advice on.
After loading and closing, if I cock it "normal" or briskly, everything is fine. However, if I slowly cock it (as in quietly so as not to spook a game animal) the hammer doesn't want to catch.
Looking into the action with the hammer back I see that the little part (sear? striker? I can't tell for sure) doesn't want to lock under the hammer block if I cock the hammer slowly. If I pull the hammer back quickly it goes under and locks just fine.
I looked at another Contender that doesn't have this problem, but when I cocked it slowly the little part still doesn't go as far under the hammer block as when it was cocked quickly. The hammer stays back, but the part doesn't engage as far.
I didn't notice the problem right away and I was shooting it with cheap bulk .22LR ammo, so residue could be the problem. I didn't have any GunScrubber handy but I did hose out the gun with RemOil. It seemed to improve a little but not solve the problem. I didn't have time to take the buttstock off, but when I put the butt on I remember that it fit tightly and I wonder if the stock could be rubbing against a pin in the action and slowing down that little moving part that needs to catch under the hammer block?
I'm also going to get some GunScrubber and try that.
Any other suggestions before I send it to T/C? I'm not big on filing on the trigger parts but if you can tell me where to look and I see an obvious burr I might give it a very slight polish.
Could the trigger engagement screw need to be adjusted? I tested the trigger per the T/C manual and the hammer never drops when the action is closed sharply with it cocked and it never trips when the action is closed without the hammer cocked. I've seen the latter happen before when the trigger engagement was set too fine.
Thanks for the help.
