I just got my first muzzleloader recently and want to find economical bullets to shoot from my .50 cal Lyman Trade Rifle in 1:48. If anyone has some Lee R.E.A.L. Bullets I could buy off of them to try them out before investing in molds and lead melting gear I would greatly appreciate it. I Am also interested in trying some of the lyman 370gr Maxi bullets if anyone casts them.

I have a .54 cal with a 1:48 twist and the R.E.A.L. bullet works very well,330 grains on top of 70 grains of Goex FFG..plenty of kick and it shoots straight.
The nice thing about the REAL bullet is that you can shoot 30 rounds without having to swab the bore and there is no patch lube and cut procedure to slow you down.

Contact DD4lifeusmc. I bought some of the 320 grn version from him for my Lyman Deerstalker, and with a wad they worked very well, enough so I bought a mold. Without a wad it keyholed at 50 yds.

Lee REAL bullets

Rodwha, good to know about the wads, have been looking for wads locally but no one caries them. May have to roll my own if I can find the materials. Online shops want as much in shipping as the wads cost. I'll ask DD4lifeusmc if he can help me out with the 320's. Thx for the heads up. By the way what twist is your deer stalker and what powder are you using?

I buy my felt from Durofelt.com. Scroll down until you find the one labeled for wads.

I bought 2 punches from a retired machinist on another forum. $10 + shipping and he makes them to size specifications.

I use mostly 3F Olde Eynsford powder, but also have tried Triple 7.

The Deerstalker and Trade Rifle both use a 1:48" twist.

DD4lifeusmc has very reasonable prices. He also sells a bunch of other things. I've bought from him several times now.

I've been using the Gatofeo #1 lube for both wads and bullets. I like it, and it's easy and cheap to make.

Gatofeo's #1 lube (by weight):
1 part mutton tallow
1 part paraffin was
1/2 part beeswax

It's a 1 in 48.

They don't keyhole at 100. I don't know the group size since it was crazy windy (and gusting) when I was trying to group them.

You need to experiment as to what works best under the REAL bullet. I heard you needed an overpowder wad or card beneath a conical bullet for decent performance. I bought some felt by the yard in the Walmart fabric section (about $1 worth), soaked them in lube (2:1 beeswax/Vaseline) and punched them with a sharpened 1/2" pipe nipple. They worked well. I also tried an overpowder card using cereal box cardboard.

That worked well too and is easier to carry around than lubed wads so that's what I settled on.

I use 2:1 Beeswax/Vaseline in the lube grooves of the bullet itself. I simply hand lubed a bunch and keep them in a ziplock bag. The lube gets soft in hot weather but never flows, it's just sort of like chapstick.

and use a short starter with a mallot to start the bullet into the muzzle. Yeah I know you are supposed to be able to use a rod only to get the bullet down the muzzle, but my CVA Optima Pro 1:28 twist has a tight bore and starting it with this makes the loading a lot easer.

I got into muzzleloading just as a change of pace from regular rifle/pistol/shotgun loading and shooting and I don't hunt (yet) so I was looking to load as economical as possible. Blackhorn 209 is the best BP sub, but it is also the most expensive. I worked up loads with Alliant Black MZ which looks very similar to the APP Shockey Gold "kitty litter". I've been able to meter it fairly consistently and got pretty good results. This is at 50 yards.

The tears in the targets are not keyholes, they are simply rips in the paper due to no cardboard behind it.

Hope that helps.

Great info and pics, I cooked up some beeswax/peanut oil with a few squirts of bore butter. Firm at room temp and but easily worked with once heated by your hand, not runny even in Texas temps. I did get a set of gasket punches to punch wads/cards also. Like any bullet, you gotta work up loads. Nice thing about MZ is I load exactly how many rounds I need to work up each combination, no getting stuck with 10 rnds with a bad bullet/pwd combo or having to pull rounds apart.
