I just acquired a Winchester 94 ranger circa 1984 I think. I am going to make this my new truck gun but I want to put some sort of peep or ghost ring type rear site on it however I am not opposed to front sight and rear swap out. I am not as concerned with pinpoint accuracy as I am with target acquisition. I want something that will be rugged enough to put up with the typical abuse a truck gun receives. I was wondering if any if you out there have had any experience with any and could point me in the right direction. Thanks in advance for any and all information.

Yes those are exactly what I had in mind how difficult was the front sight to swap or did the rear work good with the original front

Don't rule out the Williams reciever sight.
I've got a Williams "Guide" reciever sight on my Marlin M1895GG.
My Marlin/Glenfield M30 (.30/30 half-magazine) wears a Williams 5D.
My Winchester M94 (circa 1970's) wears a Williams "Sourdough" reciever sight.
My Winchester M94 .45Colt "Legacy" wears a 5D-AE with "twilight" .125" sight.
The 5D and "Guide" will run you ~$40.00. You can remove the apeture and have a "ghost" ring.
You don't have to change out the front sight on the M94. All of mine have red-dot fiber-optic front sights except for the "Legacy" and M94 .30/30 which still have the original front blades.

If it's an "Angle Eject" be sure you get the correct sight. Earlier M94's had holes drilled on the left side of the reciever. The base for the AE uses the rear scope mount holes.

The XS uses the factory front sight. If I remember correctly it was pretty much bottomed out to get it sighted @ 100 yards.

Ghost and peep sights work best when the rear ring is back close to the eye. So I'd vote for something that mounts on the back end of the receiver.

An obvious choice is the Williams side mount that goes in the two holes on the receiver. But those style adjustable sights are going to be a little snaggy and fragile on a truck gun. A better option would be this bridge style rear sight and companion front blade;

The only downside is that the bridge style rear needs to get two holes drilled and tapped. But it would be a smoother handling setup and far more rugged.

And I see that Skinner also supplies a bridge style rear sight. Again it would need two holes to be drilled and tapped into the receiver.

Williams sights are hard to find pictures for. However I found this set on the Optics Planet sight for the Marlin that might be adaptable to the Winchester. This more compact setup looks like it would be snag free enough and rugged enough to work as a truck gun sight setup. If the screw in peep is left out then you have a nice ghost ring.

Worth noting both the XS sights and the Skinner sights have additional size rear peeps available for their sights. On the XS sights I believe they have peeps in .094" & 150" openings in addition to the supplied .191" and .230" peeps. The XS people are easy to deal with directly and should be able to supply you with a custom set rear sight with a .150" and the 191" peep which would be better sizes if you are using a blade front sight without a hood. In my experience the .230" peep is a bit big for a blade sight, it's almost a 1/4" hole, but can work really well with a hooded front sight if your Win has a front sight hood. A rear peep and a front hooded sight is about the fastest and most naturally centering sight combination I have used, the front circle just naturally centers itself in the larger rear peep. But if you are going with just a blade front sight with no hood then I would opt for the .150" & .191" rear peeps and stay away from the .230"
If ordering from XS directly you would be able to get just the rear peep sight assembly by itself, your OEM front blade should be fine, but ask them they will know for sure. They also have replacement front blades with tritium, about $60, if you wanted to go to a 24/7 tritium front sight. They come in either a big or small white dot with a tritium center dot. The disadvantage with the tritium sight blade is a wider front sight blade, more-so on the larger white dot 24/7 sight.
Not to take away anything from ordering from Midway USA, they are one of my favorite suppliers, but dealing directly with XS would give you more ability to get just the rear sight or custom mix & match peep components, they are reasonable on their shipping also.

Best o' Luck,

The Williams Receiver sight, 5d or Foolproof, is less expensive and DIY and works. I use the it with a fine bead front Firesight. But for fast and rugged there is not much wrong with the factory sights and they are as slick as you can get.
