After owning the .357 Magnum single shot and witnessed the nicer trigger pull (after the safety recall fixes) I'm having a difficult time talking myself out of getting the .30-30 version. I like the fact that I don't have to worry about brass being thrown into the next zip code....and I could get a reloading setup (like the supplies are going to magically return overnight or somethin') ....But anyway. How wrong am I for wanting to pick up another single shot rifle in a caliber that could pull double duty as hunting and general purpose rifle?

30-30 is the second best American single shot cartridge, a joy to load for and a treat for paper or deer, hogs, black bear. I'm a single shot fan, though I don't own a Henry, and strongly encourage you to do the right thing and buy that Henry. You deserve it. And you owe it to your country and your family. Get the rifle; fulfill your destiny.

I like break action singles. The Henry rifle should be a great rifle. I love my new CVA V2 TD in .44 Magnum. Not sure if they make one in the .30-30.

Pretty sure I know the answer, but gotta ask - what is the best?

I have a break action single shot in .30-30 (H&R Handi), and can definitely second those who recommend it. It is great for reloaders, because you can mess with pointed bullets since there is no tube magazine or limit on OAL, plus no chasing brass.

The 30-30 in a modern single shooter becomes a very different cartridge to reload. In addition the single shot presents some interesting options, such as the 30-30 AI or the use of 225 Win Mag brass with substantially higher rated pressures for a re-chamber in the higher pressure 30 cal like the Merrill based on the use of the 225 case, in a single shot.

The 225 WM is essentially a rimmed 22-250, by capacity and pressure.

@Tinkerer's_Dam if you started the thread to have someone talk you out of buying another rifle you came to the wrong place. THR has the biggest bunch of ENABLERS in the gun world. :D

Please post pictures of your new 30-30 when you get it. And your 45-70 when you add it.

Single shot rifles are cool and slowing down rate of fire is a good thing with ammo/component supplies today.

Have fun with your search.

Get it! I don’t have a Henry but I have been eyeing the single shot 45-70 at my lgs. Shocked it hasn’t been snatched up it has really beautiful wood on it.
As for 30-30 itself I’ve recently started loading for it in the past few months after buying a savage 340 bolt action. I’ve found it to be very easy and inexpensive to load for. I’m loading my own cast 170gn flat nose and I have a box of the 160gn FTX. Both have been great for me. I haven’t messed around with loading regular.30cal spitzer type Bullets due to mag length restrictions I’m working under.
I plan to do some hunting with mine this year. Deer and black bear. I also have some subsonic loads worked up with my cast Bullets I plan to try on some small game.
30-30 is a fantastic cartridge.

edit: let’s not forgot how inexpensive it can be to load for! With cast Bullets and slow pistol powders it doesn’t cost me anymore to load the 30-30 than it does for a 44spl. I’m going to shoot some today now that it’s on my mind.

Though I don't own a Henry, I highly recommend everyone own a 30-30. Probably about the best all-round short range hunting round there is, at least to me. I'm looking very hard at a single shot 30-30 myself, and the Henry is interesting. If you do get it, please report back and let us know how well you like it.

The best single shot American cartridge is the 30-40.

Reasons and explanations, please? Dead serious, I would've picked the 45/70 over the the 30-40 as #1. Enlighten me.

More versatility than the 45-70, which I love and shoot in competition in a Rem roller replica. The 30-40 can be loaded to virtual gallery levels with the 86 grs Mauser short jacket over TB to 30-06 factory levels with 168 grs at 2750 FPS, and with the classic Palma target loads. Like the other members of the Triumverate, the rimmed case makes for the ideal single shot cartridge and like the other two, it comes from the Golden Age of American riflery.

The ranking is a little like a powder burn rate chart; there’s not much between them. But the versatility of the 30-40, running from pipsqueak to elk ready gives it the edge. For sheer awesomeness and fun, long range reach, and devastating power, the 45-70 can’t be beat.

Its a shame you havn't tried the true champion of single shot rifle cartridges, the 444 marlin.

It’s a shame you make baseless assumptions.

I own an H&R Handi Rifle in 444 Marlin. Great rifle and cartridge. But the 444 is very duplicative, by design, of the 45-70, without its ability to deliver 500+ grs of heavy artillery.

Well then its a shame you don't appreciate perfection!

Glad I asked, thanks for the info! I had never given the round much thought, but you make some very compelling points.

And just like that, a Ruger #3 in .30-40 Krag gets added to my list... You people are the worst.
