Happen to have a Ruger #3 in the 30-40Krag also and it is one versatile round, have a couple of 30-30's, one is a 1894 Marlin Cowboy, the other is the Thompson Contender Carbine a single shot rifle, both are very accurate however the Contender is a bit more accurate with my hand casted .311 bullets that run right at 160 grain GC or so, via RCBS molds, now that is out to 150 yards. Should have a photo of it here somewhere.

I bought a Henry single shot in 30/30 last year. It’s been back to the factory for the early model trigger recall, and the updated trigger is much nicer than the original. The fit and finish on it are very good, for the price point, and it’s definitely a much nicer piece than the H&R.

My only real complaint is the lack of aftermarket rear sight options other than replacing the barrel mounted semi buckhorn. If I had to pick nits, I might also wish for a little more muzzle weight to make the balance more to my preference.

DocRock, that is great.

I have had an itch for a less common cartridge rifle in the .30 to .35 range, in either a ruger or browning high wall. This checks off some many boxes I can't even count. Thanks a lot for chiming up, and for the picture.

As to the OP, in the Henry rifle (not offered in .30-40 Krag), it would be tough to beat the .30-30. That said, there is arguably not a huge difference between a full house .357 and a .30-30 at close range. I might be tempted towards .45-70 since you already have the .357. If you are thinking about getting into reloading, .38/.357 is about the best place to start.

For really different, go 35 Krag!

I have a couple of the Henry's in other calibers. Also have had several 30-30's earlier on in life so I have a set of dies, empty brass, and even a box of commercial 30-30 ammo that I don't even remember where I got. Earlier this winter I scored some .30 caliber Speer projectiles in different weights. I wanted to load some of the 150 grain "Deep Curls" in my 30-06 or 308 but ran into some data confusion that led me to call Speer about them. The tech rep was adamant that these bullets should only be loaded up in a 30-30 so I shelved them.

Seems to me that you and the universe may be telling ME to buy a 30-30 Henry single shot.
