Looking into buying a Henry lever action in .22mag have it down to two models the H001TM which has the octagon barrel it cost about 395 or the model 1t001M which is the plan model cost about 363. I'm wondering if the octagon barrel improves the gun in anyway Henrys catalog say's it keeps the barrel cooler does it really do this or is more just for the old west look for cowboy action shooters. The plan model cost less and is a little shorter so unless the octagon barrel makes a diffrence in the handleing of the gun I'll get the plan one. My heart is set on .22mag so please don't argue about the .17 hmr.

Oh, with, definitely. How many lever action .22s are you gonna find with an octagon barrel, at that price, with that smooth an action? I put a flip-down Marbles rear sight with windage adjustment on mine and it's a pleasure to shoot.

The sights on the Frontier model (H001T) are substantially better, if that is an issue for you (a Marble's sight, I believe). Also, the front sight is attached with a dovetail, so it can be changed more easily (vs. a barrelband with an integral sight).

Hope this helps-

The longer barreled rifles, in my opinion , look beter with octagonal , the carbines with the barrel band, look beter with the round barrel.

I have the Henry H001TM with the octagon barrel. It is absolutely the most accurate of my rimfires. Plus the TM usually has a little nicer wood on it from what I have seen. My vote-- definately the octagon barrel. Then get a single action revolver in 22mag to go with it. I use mine for small game hunting. It has a short 4x scope on it. Has made kill shots on yotes at 150yds.

I don't believe an octagon barrel offers any functional advantage
(if it did, you would see them on a lot of very pricey target bolt actions, Cooper,Annie, whatever)

but it does add considerable 'cool factor', so if you want it, go for it
I don't have the Henry, but I do have a couple of BL-22s, both octagon and non-octagon
mighty fun guns, a joy to own, though neither will shoot head to head with a really good bolt action target rifle

The octagonal barrel also has a standard dovetailed front sight, just in case you decide to add a peep at the rear and a different height front sight blade.

I think the octagon barrel offers the same advantages as the bull barrels that you see on many target rifles sold today. The only difference is that the octagon isn't round. I'm not sure what the advantages of a bull barrel are other than increasing rigidness, dissipating heat, and eliminating harmonics, but they seem to be pretty popular on rimfires and centerfires alike.

A local shop here had the Golden Boy on special a couple months back for $361+tax. I picked it up and now prefer it over my other .22 lever rifles. The octagon barrel just oozes with coolness.

I got my Henry Golden Boy 22mag by dumb luck. The dealer ordered the wrong rifle for me. When it arrived the dealer discovered it was not a 22lr in a plain Henry which I had ordered.

After a little double checking he discovered that the mistake was made on his end. I then made the comment that It was a beautiful rifle, and it was to bad it was a 22mag. He then said if you think you might want it I'll knock some $$ off since It was my mistake. I looked at him and said lets start filling out the paperwork.

I love it. It is one the best mistakes to ever happen to me. :D...........Tentwing
