My travels for work take me once a month into the Austin area, and I wind up with some personal time to kill.
My brief internet searches turn up a number of private, membership-only ranges, and I probably don't need that (especially as I can't guarantee I can schedule in range time every month).
My preference is outdoor rifle ranges that allow FMJ, as I have any number of indoor ranges for handguns locally.

You are not going to like outdoor ranges in Austin, Texas, come June thru September.
Dunno, close to 50 years here in Texas out of 64; the weather can still surprise a person. But, my business reason to be in Austin is to inspect construction sites out in the weather. So, I'm outdoors any way. Hiking out to rifle butts better than climbing construction stairs or ladders.

CapnMac: that’s good you are used to the summer weather in Texas.

As for centerfire (or did you mean Rimfire?) rifles at Indoor ranges, the noise is terrible with .223, 7.62x39 and larger. as you probably know quite well.

As I said - on https://www.krtraining.com/FAQs/AustinGunFAQ.HTML you can find 100 to 300 yard out door range.

Just hydrate constantly and wear light cover garments for the sun and sun screen. Those moisture wicking long sleeve light weight t-shirts are very popular. Wear a hat and sun glasses. Light damage is accumulative.

West TN gets just as hot as south TX on some days in July and August, although humidity here can drop to 45/50 percent during a mini heatwave.

The hindrance for many of us is that even when outside and in the Shade,
Wet Eyebrows ( still ) constantly Soak shooting glasses.

Similar to what I need while going through a 4 & 5 story 300 unit apartment complexes under construction--with the advantage of, at the range I need not wear a hard hat & safety vest :)

That place in Leander may get the first nod as I have to drive through that area coming and going to Austin.

How much time do you have? Reville Peak Ranch is in Burnet. Ranges out to 1700 yards it’s probably an hour from Austin.

I have very much the same question... but either San Antonio or Corpus, where my brother lives. I found the NSSF search engine, and it helped a bit, but it's filters are nearly worthless, and every query gave me the phone book.

Bracken range in SA is a rifle/pistol range. It’s out past rolling oaks mall close to Garden Ridge.

He's actually looking for a 300yd'ish rifle range, that isn't private, and won't cost a kidney to use.
Actually, I'd be happy enough with 100 yards in a pinch. And closer to the I-35 corridor is better, since one of my considerations is in not hitting FDW much after 1500 for traffic reasons (much like how, I try to leave town not later than 1100 for similar reasons). I can't put in quite as much time as I'd like, as I'm skiving off work as it is, but anything that can break up the three hour drive, is often good. Which is why I'm also considering Weber's, in Temple, as that's about the halfway point, and getting out of the madhouse which is I-35 traffic is often a good idea.

I avoid I-35 if there is any way possible.... it's just such a trainwreck.
Agree entirely. However, it's about the only way to get from DFW to Austin and back again. I do take 360 to 287 to cut that corner off, and I use 130 to get around Austin. The number of people unclear on the concept of why & how you use a toll road makes me wonder how many are also armed with no clue.

But, it's much like DFW to Houston, it's I-45 for too much of it (although getting on the former US-75 is a surprisingly pleasant alternative).
And, this notion is all the result of my frustration with the 9 hour drive DFW-Houston-DFW represents. So, I started taking 290 to 6 to get out of Houston, and I was presented with the opportunity to hit up ranges in the BCS area as a result, to break the drive up. And, if I could make that work for the Houston trip, then why not Austin, too?

My trip to Boston--not so much.

When I go to DFW from Houston and back, the route I take totally depends on which side of the Metroplex I'm at, traffic, and the weather. I take a variety of paths that may or may not include I-45, 287, 360, 290, 6, I-35E, I-35W, etc.

For San Antone north bound to FW, I’ll consider 281 vs I-35 .

But due to my work, I’m driving those routes from 6am to 10am-ish or 7pm to 11pm-ish. Which unfortunately leaves me time to shoot only when I’m hotelling it for a few days in my destination city.

Currently, I have a membership to Range USA because they have multiple (indoor) ranges in Texas.

Bullet hole is another option in San Antonio on the far west side. They have a 300 yard lane. It’s narrow but it’s there. They have two quirks - no rapid fire rifles (too many neighborhoods nearby) and a one time $5 membership card that’s mainly used to track what lane you’re on (very high tech system involving hanging your card on a peg board). Benches are covered and there are fans to help with the heat but it does get really muddy after a rain like we had yesterday.

The best part is it’s only 15 minutes from the house.
