Hi-Point .40

I'm thinking of getting an inexpensive handgun to keep in my vehicle, and have been reading about the low cost Hi-Point semiautos that are out there. I see by doing some research that some call them junk, while others report that they are pleasantly surprised at their performance.

I'd appreciate hearing from anyone who owns a Hi-Point .40 and how it does for you. Thanks!

My brother bought one of the .45's as a "truck" gun. It is defenatly not a BBQ gun. It is very heavy, the trigger isn't smooth, and the ergonomics aren't great, and it is not all that fun to shoot, also you need a punch to field strip it. But does any of that matter in a SD situation...NO.

It feeds just about anything, it is accurate enough to hit CM at SD distances and packs a .45acp punch, and odly enough for such a low cost weapon it has a life-time no-questions asked warranty. I think to many people rag on Hi-point owners, they are great "truck", and "house" guns. I think it is great a company understands that everyone should be able to afford a SD weapon, it's just to bad the media makes it seem like all Hi-point owners are crack dealers. For what you are looking for, I think it is a good choice.

I think they are fine for the money. I would not carry one with a live round in the pipe though. Mine shoots very nicely after adding a rubber grip with finger grooves. The pistol is very top/front heavy and the stock grips are too slick. The rubber grips help you to hold the muzzle up. Mine is very accurate and eats all kind of ammo. Shoot the crap out of it and send it in every few thousand rounds and they will go over it and make it like new.

Another decent low budget gun is the CZ-52 or the makarov. The CZ-52 probably has the better penetration if that makes a difference for a "truck" gun.

Worst handgun (no, make that firearm) I ever owned. Past seven yards the accuracy was completely off when it did not have a failure-to-feed which was most of the time no matter what ammo I used. The gun shop I bought it from sent it back to Hi-Point twice for service and then ended up exchanging it for another one which was just as bad as the first. I eventually traded it in towards a CZ75B (much much better).

Don't know about the 40, but I've got a 9mm that has worked like a charm for over 2,000 rounds.

You know considering how many good things people who own Hi Points say about them, its just a shame the company can't make them look less hideous, maybe they'd sell more. I fired a Hi Point .40 once, it didn't do anything for me, the ergonomics (what little there was) didn't suit me. However my friend really liked it and was pretty accurate with it. If I remember correctly he got it used for less than $100 and he didn't seem to regret it.

I admit I think the 40/45 is pretty ugly, but the 9mm isn't AS ugly I don't think. To me it has a solid, workmanlike look. I don't think the ergos are bad on it either.

We won't even talk about the "compensated" one though.

Why not get a S&W Sigma for $100 more with the rebate offer they currently have? You also get 2 more mags in the mail in addition to the two that come with the pistol. They're a heck of alot better looking than a Hi-Point, and you can carry it if your primary is out of service for some reason.
