Hi-Point carbine owners: honest assessments please?

Thanks for this timely thread. I'm shopping for a 9mm carbine right now. My first choice is a Ruger PC9... But they are hard to fine. Maybe an HP will do.

Stay away from Hi-Points if you want a BBQ gun to impress your buddies. Thrift will score you ZERO cool points and all the mall ninjas will pwn you.

That being said, I like my C9 enough that I'd like a carbine to go with it. Especially one with the old-style "Planet of the Apes" stock. Classy.

But the left-hand charging handle seems weird to me. Any owners/former owners find this to be a problem?

WOW Tulsamal,
Sounds pretty vain to me. Spend 3 times as much for something that doesn't function any better but has a different name attached. Just because some one has a Hi-Point doesn't mean they take less "pride in ownership". It's a recreational tool that can be used for defensive purposes and does that job very well. Not sure if you feel threatened that a lowly Hi-Point can function just as well as your $900 carbine, but it sure sounds like there's some insecurity there. I could be wrong, my wife has always said I'd make a horrible therapist :p.

have the 9mm. no problems with it. no my favorite gun but it goes bang and my wife loves shooting it.

They run, and run well. Buy and don't look back. I'll take a Hi Point carbine over a handful of Sub2Ks, and I'm not exaggerating.

First off: Really? You buy guns based on impression?

Second, what on Earth makes you believe anyone on THR cares about mall ninja opinions?

Lastly, the charging handle can be switched to either side of the bolt. Use Google.

First and second, it's called sarcasm. I'd have thought the use of BBQ gun, Mall Ninja and pwn would have tipped off most people. Guess not. The internet tends to take the edge off of my otherwise rapier-sharp wit.

Third, I know how to use google. Bu this is a forum so I thought I'd ask.

But I mean the rest of it. I own a Hi-Point, appreciate it for what it is and on occasion display Pride of Ownership wherein I take it out, clean it and admire it.

Same team, bro. Same team.

I'm getting old. Forgive me.

Bought a 9545ts as a fun/HD/truck gun. Better than expected accuracy, flawless operation, and here in California ten round mags are the norm. It's a nice handy size, and the wife is a whole lot more comfortable with it than a 12ga pump.

If it does the job, I don't care if it says "Mattel" on it - and it does the job!

I really just wish someone would remake the marlin camp gun. I'd like a 40 that uses Glock mags maybe, with a plain stock and sights. I don't WANT tacticool. I don't need an Uzi/ mp5/ ar15 carbine. I was briefly excited by the ATI JR, until I realized it's over 6 bills and not even safe for +p ammo. For over $600? Really? And is that much tactical rail really neccesary for the average user?
I wish I could just start my own company to make simple things I want... but I guess if the market for them existed, marlin would still make em.... until then, unless I run across a real steal on a camp 9, (they never made a 40, sadly) I guess I'll keep trying to persuade myself that a hi-point would make me just as happy. :banghead:

Have a 9mm 995ts and it's been reliable and scary accurate, BUT this is using various FMJ and I have only shot it out to 50 feet (indoor range). With that said the groups were tight. I have five factory mags and had zero problems with each. It's a fun plinker. I'd shoot a couple boxes of hollow points through it before I'd trust it with home defense. I picked up a couple of boxes of 100 round Remington 115 gr HP to try in it. The old school design should allow it to feed properly. Get one and have fun with it!

I have the 45. Super fun gun to shoot. Easy to take apart has shot everything I've put through it.

If you have to be persuaded after the feedback you've been given here, maybe it's not for you.

I think that the use of proprietary, low-cap mags is probably the single biggest complaint people have about the Hi-Point carbine. I wish it wasn't so but California Uber Alles and all that.

Get a used one and if you don't like it you'll only be out $50 at most after you resell it. Who knows? Having a Hi-Point instead of a Marlin Camp9 might make you happier than having nothing instead of the Marlin.;)

Had a nine for years. paper plate accuracy until I it got it scoped it. Improved to smaller paper plates. Tons of cheap fun.
On a lark I bought a Ruger PC 9 Carbine.
Sold the 995 and now looking to get another as the the wife said "what? I liked that rifle" :)

Hi All,

As far as the limited capacity magazines for the Hi-Point go, remember ProMag makes a 15 rounder in 9mm. I've got 2. One has been perfect and made a fun gun even more fun. The second one had a problem. I sent it back to ProMag (after calling and getting a Return Authorization number) and they sent me a new one free. I haven't had a chance to use the new one yet. It is always best if there are no problems but in the real world we are forced to live in prompt fixing of a problem is pretty good.

On another point: Pride of ownership can also include the feeling of "fooling the experts" by having an overachieving gun. We can all admire a beautiful walnut stocked 416 Rigby even though we will never point one at Jumbo. If someone else feels like his Hi-Point is a Little Engine That Could that is just as valid in my book. As said above, we are all on the same team.

Dan

I had the 9mm. I really liked it. More accurate than I expected. The lack of his cap mags was disappointing. I sold it to fund another project.

Got One!

I picked up an old style 995 from a friend and put a red dot on it. Got a nice deal: nice case, three mags, ammo, for a bill and a half. Friend says it's never been fired. It sure looks new.

Looking forward to getting out to the range next week and sighting in. I've been reading a bunch online about these guns and one word keeps popping up that I don't see much for other weapons: "Fun!"

I'm looking forward to some deceased paper plates, and I know my wife will love taking out her share of them!

Welcome to THR, and congrats on IMO the best tac PCC out there.

I've got one of the newer stocked 9mm's, I use it as a truck gun, shoots good, trigger is rough, didn't like the original peep (hard to use in low light) so I took it off and put on a scope. Fun gun, great for smaller folks, kids love to shoot it and its cheap.
