Hi-Power Problem or Not

I've owned this Browning Hi-Power for a couple of years and when cleaning it I always take it apart to do a good job. I do mean field strip and nothing more. Have had trouble getting the recoil spring and guide back in. The spring is stiff and the guide rod is short so the spring has been slightly bent for some time. Now today when reassembiling the spring got really kinked and it appears that it will rub on the frame in operation. Do I need a new spring? Can the guide rod be made full length by putting a hole in the front of the slide? Just don't worry about it?

Probably OK, but new recoil springs are cheap, couldn't hurt to put a new one in. Don't mess with the guide rod.

There is a certain method to it. With practice you will be able to get the spring in and out without trouble.

Thanks. I guess I can shoot it some but will get a new spring soon. I forgot to mention this gun is a .40 so the spring is probably stronger than the 9mm one. It also has a Crimson Trace grip.

I put the barrel, guide rod, and spring in all as one assembly. The barrel gives you a lot more surface to grip on that 17lb recoil spring.

Using my right hand to grip the barrel, I rest the muzzle of the slide against the outside of my left palm to hold it stationary and guide the recoil spring in with my left hand's fingers.

I hope that's clear. Make sure you have the guide rod in the right way around before buying a new spring.

I would get a new spring, I never had a problem with my Hi Power.
