I am going to a gunshow tomorrow and a gun auction on Sunday. The auction has a HK-91 in like new condition, maybe unfired. Do I hold out and buy the HK for a ridiculous price on Sunday and have an original HK or buy a PTR-91 at the gunshow? I want the gun for a shooter, SHTF Gun not for a safe queen collectible. Is the extra grand worth the difference??

it's up to you. original or knock-off.lol

whatever makes you feel better. i'd get HK91.

I had one of the older PTR-91's and it worked great. I added a tele-stock, carry handle, wide foregrip w/original HK bipod, paddle mag-release, and HK flash supressor, and had the barrel shortened to 16". I sold it due to difficulty manipulating the controls - I couldn't reach the safety with my thumb, or the original mag-release with my pointer finger. The HK guns seem to be made for people with very large hands. If you're set on a HK-91 or a PTR-91, you may want to go with the PTR-91 if you intend to modify it as I did (the HK-91 would surely lose some value after being altered). If I were to buy a .308 semi-auto, I'd buy an AR from DPMS.

If this is going to be a shooter get the PTR-91 you cant go wrong. If this going to be shoot "a little-admired alot" go for the HK91 (resale value). I have a HK91 with 10 original rds through the barrel its a show piece. The quality of the PTR's is excellent almost on par with the HK's. Both eat up SA battle packs well. How this helps,
Mike

PTR-91 is built to the specs of the H&K. Sans full-auto of course.

If this isn't going to be a safe-queen, then the PTR will do alright. The H&K is just as good, but since you aren't interested in it's collectibility, then the PTR is every bit the gun it is.

I'll never say anything negative about a PTR-91, ever. I put 500 rounds of Wolf through mine pretty quick one afternoon, and all it did was hit the target and spit brass a long ways. It's a well made gun. I can't think of a reason to spring for a more expensive gun; I don't think you'll get more out of it.

For the same price, the LR-308:

may have been more accurate, but based on your question, I'd go PTR-91 all over again.

Collectible or shooter? I wanted a shooter so I got a PTR91. I had a few options ordering it so I got what I wanted.

Regardless, the $3.50 magazines are wonderful!

I was once issued and carried an HK. Currently own a PTR. Based on criteria you stated, I'd get the PTR and spend the difference on ammo. I don't believe the HK nameplate warrants the price difference except to a collector.

really the only difference is one is still being made, and the other is not and there is a limited amount in the country. This difference is what sets the price apart, not the quality. If your not a collector, then do not bother with the HK.

I have two PTR91s and both are much more picky about ammo than my FAL. That is a definite downside.

Not sure how much research you've done, but a lot of people are having issues with their PTRs due to improperly cut flutes in the barrel.

The PTR is actually supposed to be more accurate than the original HK91, but it seems it came at the cost of reliability. If money is no object, I would go HK91. If it is, I would go FAL at this point until PTR decides to right their wrong.

it is a mixed bag with the PTR, but if you shoot ammo that hasn't been sealed with tar it will work great.

Get a chamber flute brush and keep the chamber dry, and you should have no issues.

I really enjoy shooting mine.

Even before the current PTR issues, I'd advise people to consider the HK not becuase I'm a horrible purist (I'm not, at this point I only have Vector-built roller-locks) but because the heavyweight barrel on the PTR absolutely wrecks the balance of the gun.

Don't buy a NIB 91 though, just look for a shooter-grade used one, save yourself the upgrades, the ammo finickiness, and have something that balances properly (and will retain its resale value at this point, something I'm not sure the PTR will do after the current silliness).

I have to disagree with stubbicatt on this one. It may work for his PTR but check with the folks over at hkpro regarding the PTR problems. There is little talk of extra cleaning fixing the issues. It's talk of purchasing a new barrel and having custom gunsmithing done.

I recently got a used PTR 91. It has the AO serial number. It shoots great. As I understand its the rifles with the AW serial numbers that are having the problems with being finicky on ammo.

I have heard the PTR-91 has less flutes than the HK91.

Not sure but thats what I heard. I do have a real HK91 but I like the price on the PTRs

I believe it's that the flutes aren't cut deep enough, not so much the number of them. I could be wrong though.
