I have a chance to buy a JUG of Longshot. Never used it but looked up loads on Hodgdon. Seems it is good for 9, 40, and Mag loads.
Mostly a shotgun powder but a lot of others are also.

Anyone use it? Good Bad Indifferent?

Burn rate is down on the slow end.

I bought some to replace power pistol since I couldn't find any.

I think it's a great powder for high velocity in 40sw and 45 acp.
I am hoping to shoot some 40sw loads across the chronograph today.

I was able to get 925fps out of some 230gr 45's with great accuracy

It has been working good for me in 9mm (115gr lead through a Hi Point carbine) and .40 (155gr plated through 3 pistols) with mid-high charge weights. I've also done a little .357mag testing with 110gr XTPs (4" GP100) with good, not great, results. I haven't found a good .45acp load with it yet.

Longshot seems to work well for me in 40 sw for jacketed and plated. The starting loads seem to be rather dirty, but it cleans up real well by the midrange loads. It is loud.

I like the powder, as it is very versatile, *almost* like Unique, but it meters better. If I had only one pistol powder Longshot is it.

Well I snagged 8lbs of it so I better find a use for it!:D Will not even mention how much it didn't cost me.:)

If we could ship powder I certainly would share,

I've loaded 9mm, .40, and .38+P with it for quite a long time and absolutely love it for what it's meant to do, which is full tilt loading. It performs very well when worked up to it's potential, but doesn't work well down at the lower end of the tables, as it is one of those powders that needs full operating pressure to function with consistency. It's for this reason that I don't bother starting below mid table also. I have a good inventory of it myself.

My son's favorite 9mm load is made with a 124gr FMJ bullet and Longshot. I also have used Longshot in .38 Special +P loads and I see no reason why it won't work well in the 40 S&W either.

IMO it's on the slow side for the 45 Auto and standard pressure .38 Special loads but I'm sure you can use it up in the 9mm and 40 S&W and Magnum loads. Longshot will produce close to top velocity loads in the .357 Magnum, just below what W296/H110 will produce yet still real magnum loads.

Thanks for the feedback.

I can use it for lots of revolver calibers that use a lot of powder like the 357, 41, 44 Mag and 45 Colt.

9mm and 40 should be good also

I believe they guy I got it from was loading a lot of 500 SW Mag with it.

I purchased some because it was all I could get at the time and I needed pistol powder. Not my favorite but seems to work well in 9mm towards the mid to high range. Nice muzzle blast, LOUD. Seems to work well in .357.

I have found 5.4-5.5 grns seems to work well with the MBC 125gr cone in 9mm.
Can't seem to find my notes for this one but as I recall 6.5 with a MBC 140 zinger in .357 gave me around 1200fps.

The same 6.5 with 230 LRN in .45 gave me around 840. Not my favorite .45 APC load but they went bang, but seemed a little stouter than I prefer for punching paper. Started at 6 but 6 did not ssem to burn clean.

Hope you enjoy it..........LOUD

I would love to find some. I used it for my 45acp and liked it a lot. It had to be loaded on the higher end of the data but it worked great and pretty accurate. Would love to try some for 38 super.

Loudshot, er, Longshot is great for full power jacketed loads in several calibers. 9mm carbine loves it. I don't use it for lead pills or low- to medium range loads. It scorches my brass, too, even at the top end of the load range. Have to tumble it longer after. But I like its performance a lot.

It's funny, I was looking for pistol powder and the guy in front of me bought some for his .45's so I figure that's fine. Bought a pound, get it home and read the label , what shotgun powder. After doing some reading loaded up 500 round under 180 grain round nose. Sent them down the tube over the weekend and was very happy in my M&P 40 FS & Shield. Came through pretty clean at 6.4grains.

It's a keeper

There are MANY shotgun powders which are used for handgun loading, ever hear of Unique shotgun powder?

AND:
Red Dot, Green Dot, Blue Dot, Herco, Promo, Clays, Universal, Lil'Gun, 700x, 800x, PB, SR-7625, SR-4756, Solo 1000, WST, WSF and probably a bunch more I just didn't think of right now...

I just started using it for .40cal, and am looking to use it in place of Unique, as Longshot meters a bit better and burns cleaner. It is NOT for low powered loads, but works for medium to hot loads.

I always get a kick out of those who classify handgun powders separately from shotgun powders also Arch. I honestly don't think I use a handgun powder that I don't also use for Shotgun loads.

In magnum cartridges it produces more a mid range load. It still performs very well, just doesn't get em out there at maximum potential.

I heard something a while back that kind of set me back on my heals about Longshot. Someone made a statement to the effect that L.S. is a difficult powder to manage pressures with. I actually chuckled, cause in the cartridges I run it in, I almost always end up at, or above the published maximum, sometimes significantly above, and without any pressure issues what so ever, including 9mm.

Good stuff, loud, but good!

I bought a pound of Longshot. Haven't used it yet, but it is supposed to be one of the best choices for hot 10mm...I'll find out one day.

Are you guys really getting good results from Longshot in the 45 Auto? I just find that hard to believe because IMO it's way too slow for that application.

I don't even like HS-6 in the 45 Auto which is faster. The slowest powder I will use in the 45 Auto is AA#5 but that's me. That cartridge is a low pressure round and Longshot is practically a magnum class powder.

What bullet are you using? Accuracy? Clean? Consistency? Are your loads compressed?
Enlighten me, please!
