Hollow Pointing A Cap N Ball Boolit

Rodwha that test, as lame as it is, was fired from 25 paces or around 25 yards, how far was the test with the 31 caliber Pocket?

I don't recall the range, but I believe it was 5-7 yds.

"Or buy a c&b revolver and have fun stopping bad guys!!!!"

:D

I don't carry a cap n ball, but I don't care for Glocks. I carried a full size 1911, and even a 5 shot .44 Mag with Spl's. I like big holes!

But I'll be moving from Texas to Virginia where I'll be surrounded by politicians!

rodwa,

Having read through the posts am I correct that you are using a 44 caliber C&B revolver loaded with homemade designed hollow points for home defense?

Like some of the other posters in a word why?

I enjoy my b/p firearms but take every advantage of the over 150 years of firearm and ammunition improvements for when my life is on the line.

It appears all you are really accomplishing is putting a hole in a soft lead bullet.

My ROA has been 100% reliable since I found proper fitting caps. Why not trust it? I know it's more than powerful enough and it creates big holes.

This can be said of every bullet, black powder or no, yet many range shooters shoot hollow points. The HP's I use are large and and they make a significant reduction in bullet weight. That means I get higher velocity and less recoil for the same powder charge. I also have found that the HP version of the same bullet is more accurate. I have confirmed this in a Ransom rest, not much but measurable.

Also, with a profiled seater on my off gun loader, they start easier and always perfectly straight.

And the number one reason is....With soft lead they absolutely expand and I like hollow points. They make water jugs go kaboom better.

It's all about what is fun and makes us happy...right?

To load a hollow point you would have to change the front of the loading lever some how, right? I don't shoot conicals only round ball so I'm kind of a rookie here.

Is Virginia getting pretty bad for firearms?

With my ROA's stock ram I've seen that it rounds the edges of FN bullets. I'm not sure if it would mar a HP badly enough or not. I suppose to see if it's an issue I ought to drill a hole into a FN and see what happens to it upon loading.

I'm not sure if VA is getting bad on firearms, but it sure is getting bad with politicians! Never seen so many congregating in one place!

If your ROA is powerful enough why are you trying to create more deadly bullets?

Wild Bill fired his Navy Revolvers every day and cleaned because he wanted to be sure they would fire when he needed them.

Anyway you pay your money and take your chances.

Uhmm...Camaro SS, Corvette ZO6, 44 magnum, 454 Casull, 460 S&W. If you have to ask, you won't understand.

It's not so much that I'm wanting to increase damage, though I'll take it, but to reduce the odds of passthroughs as I have neighbors downstream.

Excluding a CNS hit even a good hit doesn't necessarily put anyone down. Though rare there are several accounts of a dozen or more hits with most in critical spots that didn't set him down. So the quicker the blood loss the quicker I can rest.

If a ball pushed by just 30 grns went past 20" even those would keep going.

I drilled a couple of 36 caliber Kaido bullets out with a cap size drill then filled the hole with powder and glued in a cap just below the nose of the bullet (don't try this at home folks) expanded quite nicely when if hit.

Jaxerno - that sounds very much like the Metford explosive bullets developed by the British after the Crimean War. It was supposed to be used against artillery limbers or cassions.

Jaxenro,
If you shoot someone with that special hollow pointed exploding round (even if they are raping your 3 year old daughter) the perp's lawyer will paint you to the jury as a sadistic sicko who needs to be jailed for shooting a poor misdirected troubled former youth. Plus you might get pinched for manufacturing an explosive device! A kid got expelled from school just for pointing his finger at another kids head for a joke. What I'm getting at is you would be better to shoot someone either with conventional ammo similar to what the local cops use or unmodified C&B bullets or you will be savaged by some shyster for cruelty even though the S.O.B. deserved worse. Save those specialty slugs for 4 legged vermin like raccoons, possums or coyotes.

I thought I read somewhere that you can simply carve/press an "x" into ball ammo to give the expansion effect. I haven't tried it.

Well, even considering the source:neener: The facts don't change:

1. The North invaded the South
2. Insulted the women folk
3. Pillaged farms and communities
4. Disrupted life
5. Burned homesteads
6. Run off live stock
7. Brought in the liberal "Carpet Baggers"

All the while, having the audacity to call it a "Civil" War... I agree with swathdiver, Northern Aggression is a more appropriate term.

As for the guns... The Navy Six has a history, an impressive history. Not my first choice for modern defensive purposes - but, I have a couple that stay with me on a regular basis when on the farm.

Sir,

I notice that you have conveniently left out that the South enslaved in excess of FOUR MILLION HUMAN BEINGS. So the following needed to be done:

1. The North invaded the South
2. Insulted the women folk
3. Pillaged farms and communities
4. Disrupted life
5. Burned homesteads
6. Run off live stock
7. Brought in the liberal "Carpet Baggers"

It is estimated that over a million and half men, women and children were murdered during the time that slavery reigned over the South.

It was endemic
It was part and parcel of their entire economic makeup
It was written in to the constitution of the majority of southern states.
It is indefensible by any moral code.

To suggest that whatever happened to the South was somehow more grievous than what the southern ingrained infrastructure did to four million slaves is akin to justifying what the Nazi's did to "relocate" the Jews. Whatever methods it took to rid this country of that evil was absolutely justified.

If you want to argue this out I'm more than willing because I want to see how someone completely ignores the evil of slavery and justifies the existence of the southern way of life that relied on and required it. However, I feel that we're about to be stepped on by a moderator.

Game on sir....

MODS locking the thread, Probably so... lighten up and have another beer. The topic was about boolits.

But the battle provided one silver lining, it brought a new leader in command of Army of Northern Virginia. In so many weeks the massive army that was McClellan was sledgehammered back to the sea asking for rescue from the Navy and hiding underneath their guns. To the North, a new Northern hero, the hapless General John Pope, nervously waiting behind the Rappahannock River, ignorant of the Hell that was moving north up those Virginia roads led by General Robert E. Lee!!!!!!!!!!

I love that quote!!! Written by a Yankee also.
