Hey all! I've got me a nice S&W Model 64 DAO revolver. Here it is:

m64.jpg

As you can see, the gun doesn't have a hammer spur. This has made finding a holster for it difficult, as I prefer a thumb strap. I am looking for a duty style, police holster (probably black leather) that has a thumb strap but is made for this type of DAO revolver. So far I haven't been able to find any!

They must exist right? This revolver was used by the Brinks security company, and DAO S&W revolvers of this sort without the hammer spur were supposedly popular for police in a number of areas... so what holster did these people use? I bought a used Safariland K-frame duty holster but this model has an exposed trigger guard (not an issue unto itself) but it's thumb snap did not secure the bobbed hammer... you could pull the trigger with the gun in the holster and the hammer would drop! Obviously not good. In the meantime, I've been using an el cheapo Wal Mart BLACKHAWK! nylon holster, which is not durable and the belt loop is super cheap and junky.

Again, concealability is not my goal. This will be worn around the compound and at the range, and if at all possible I'd like to keep with the "1980s police" theme and get a leather OWB duty style holster in black to match my HKS speedloader case. I am open to custom holster makers but would prefer to stay under $100 if at all possible.

So could anyone out there point me in the direction towards this type of holster?

Thanks so much all! :)

I'd call and talk to a holster maker that probably has experience with those revolvers. While there is certainly somebody on the Safariland staff that knows an awful lot about holsters for those guns, my guess is you have practically no chance of talking to one of them if you called Safariland on the phone.

On the other hand, you may have better success calling…

Galco, Bianchi, Safariland all make belt holsters for that gun in black leather without a retention strap. Some would have adjustable screws to control how tightly it grips the gun. I do remember seeing holsters with a finger (not thumb) strap around the trigger guard, but it looked awkward to me. Otherwise, there might be aKydex or other plastic holster with active retention on the trigger guards, though that's not the look you wanted.

I'm almost sure that what you are looking for doesn't exist...if it ever did.

The lack of a hammer spur makes a thumb break pretty much superfluous

When I wore a revolver, we usually carried in the breakfront Hoyt which really didn't need a hammer spur for retention.

...the other popular holster in LE was the Bianchi breakfront

My first thought was the Fobus Paddle holster...which also doesn't need a thumb break

9mmepiphany - I still have two BBW Hoyt holsters. I didn't have a cartridge holder like yours but did have a dump pouch for two speedloaders. :D

Cooldill - Getting a new hammer fitted will make it easier to find a holster. Besides removing the spur, their armorer ground off the single action notch of the hammer.

I kept my Hoyt when out department switched to SIGs. Like a fool, I didn't "buy ($100)" either my original issue M-15 or M-13...both had less than a box of rounds through them and were engraved with the department's name (but no shield).

We (SO) were issued the cartridge slide when they issued the original Safariland Border Patrol holsters (with the "new" green suede). The only time I ever wore it was for graduation from the academy. We had to buy out own speedloaders (I bought Comp-1s) and holders. The local PD issued dump pouches and Speed Strips

An old former police officer told me he carried in spare cartridges in a cartridge slide. They were supposed to carry 158 RN bullets. He drilled his out and filled the holes with grey crayon. That way a casual observer couldn't tell he had hollow points. Ahh, the '60s. I was an kiddie then.

Thanks gang!

Well I went ahead and bought TWO holsters from ebay. One is a Don Hume break front design, and the other is an NYPD issue Jay Pee holster. I've always wanted the Jay Pee, especially after reading about them in the works of Jim Cirillo (if you don't know who that is, find out).

When I get them, I'll have to see which one I like better! Thanks all!

Cooldill,
Do you know what your trigger pull weight is>
MY Model 36 (no Dash) is simarlly bobbed and the trigger pull is pushing about # a bit too uch!

What 9mmepiphany posted is pretty much it.
I saw a lot of Brinks guys come through my work and they all just used the typical police holster and either didn't bother snaping it, or removed the strap altogether.
Really difficult to make a thumb break work without a hammer spur.
You could have the revolver converted to a traditional DA/SA and replace the hammer with a spur hammer.

Hello! I'm not sure what the trigger pull wait is... I don't own a trigger scale (or fish scale LOL!) but it's crisp and certainly not too heavy, in fact it's pretty light, lighter than my S&W 642-1. I believe (don't quote me on this) that the J-frame have a heavier trigger due to the smaller lockwork or something like that, the K, L, and N frames all have lighter triggers.

Hey gang!

Well I settled on a Don Hume "Bullwark" holster for my Model 64. It's black leather, with a thumb break that works off the topstrap. The holster is designed to were the gun cannot be grabbed from behind... the gun must be tilted forward before the draw or else it's locked in place. I really like the holster so far!!
