Hello Guys,

I want to get a mosin Nagant, but there are so many different ones to and different models im ingonrant to. I have gathered the M44 is a shorter version of the 91. But what about the 38's? What does the word tula mean, what makes it better? And what about PEM whats that mean? ALso Izhevsk and PU? Im sorry im just lost and cant find out what the differences are I dont mind spending up to about 175 or less ive been to aimsurplus.com, wholesalegunsandammo, and aztec, Ive been looking at there decommissioned sniper rifles... is that bs or are they really good any one have one? What im lookin for is something that shoots really well.

If you can answer any of the questions please do it will be much appricated

The M44 is a carbine version("short") with the bayonet permanantly attached to the muzzle, it folds back. The M38 is the other carbine version with no ability to accept a bayonet. Tula and Izhevsk are two Russian state arsenals. If I remember right PEM and PU are two types of scopes that mount on the nagant. As to the decomissioned sniper rifles I dont know.

I sortof had the same questions that you did. I would suggest a trip over to surplusrifles.com. They have a lot of good info on the difference in types and history of most milsurp rifles. I even went as far as to buy their cd they sell that has most of their articles on it . A well spent 12 bucks.

A visit to www.mosinnagant.net will do you well.

The M44, M38, and M91/59 are carbines - the M44 is the only one that comes with a bayonet.

The m91 and M91/30 are full length rifles - the M91 being older and a little longer.

Hex shaped receivers on the older rifles and Tula made rifles usually command a slightly higher price. Why? Perhaps some like the Tula star or perhaps it is because Tula is easier to pronounce than Izhevsk. Millions of these rifles were made with huge amounts made during WW2.

The finest mosin nagants made are the Finnish ones. They are generally much more accurate and were made in far fewer numbers than the Russians. Right now the bargains are the Finn M39s from WGA.

With the current price of Russian Mosins you can go wrong getting one of each model. When you factor in inflation, prices on Russian milsurps has never been better.

As Zeke said, go over to 7.62x54r.net. It has all the info you are concerned with & will provide you with good color photos of each. I recently purchased a cd of this site because it is so useful.

Also, a good one.. http://www.russian-mosin-nagant.com/ Lots of good people. If you have a C&R license, these guys have the BEST Mosin deals, and quality - http://www.aztecguns.com/index.htm I have a M38, and love it, looking to get an M44, and then a 91/30 for my little collection.
These rifles are great quality milsurps at a killer price. Just remember to clean the snot out of the thing - 60 years of sitting sets that cosmo in deeeeeeep.:D
Enjoy!

I ordered a Mosin-Nagant M44 from Aztec after I received my C&R. I now have a M38 and a M90/31 on order from them. They will be in next week.
