A number of years back I was given a Browning BPS stalker as a gift. It cam with a 26" barrel meant for hunting applications and for that purpose it has been the best shotgun I have ever owned.

When browning came out with their home defense model I wanted to get one so that I would have two guns, one for home defense and one for hunting, that had the same controls.

Sadly the BPS was out of my price range then, as it is now, so I settled for a mossberg 500 instead. I never had any regrets with my choice except that when I used my BPS for hunting I felt myself wishing that my 500 had the same smooth action and crisp trigger of the BPS.

Recently I acquired an older BPS barrel. Its previous owner had sold their BPS and didn't it anymore. They had bought a spare barrel for the gun in order to affix it with rifle sights for use with slugs. The barrel had a fixed choke which made the barrel hard for them to sell.

When asked if I wanted it I quickly said "Yes" and snapped it up. I knew what I wanted to use it for.

To modify the barrel I first mounted it on my hunting gun. I then took a dowel and with the action closed, dropped it down the barrel.

I marked it off at the top of the barrel and then measured 18.5" up from the bottom of the dowel/barrel. This put the point where I wanted to make the cut right in the middle of the mount that holds the rib to the barrel. I moved forward a bit so the cut would be at 18.75". Then I measured it again, then again, then once more just to be sure.

Then I took a hacksaw, worked up some courage, sawed the barrel in two, and then cleaned up the muzzle and rib with a file.

I touched up the sights a bit, added a shot shell cuff, and there we go! An 18.5" barreled BPS.

Not quite tactical thanks to the nifty scroll work on the action but it will do in a pinch I think.

What do you think?

Nice!

If anyone asks?

Tell them you had the engraving done to cover up the blood etched receiver from the last tactical engagement it was involved in!

That ought to shut them up!

I suspect that the buckshot will come out the business end same as always but I'll post a pattern if/when I get the chance to shoot it.

Dude, if the weapon is a better weapon it doesn't matter if it is pink or has scrollwork.

Seems to me you did just fine. Make sure it shoots where it looks though, especially if you plan to use slugs in it. Having the sights might help out if POA vs. POI are a little off due to slight differences in barrel wall thickness.

Both my Ithaca police special and my DSPS (which are essentially the same gun as yours) come with hunting scenes on the receiver. I do not understand the issue.

Can you please elaborate a bit on the sights you mounted to the rib? Who makes them? Also, is the rear a ghost ring?

I too am interested in the sights! I don't like my stock 18.5" barrel for my Mossberg and would like to cut down a ribbed barrel, but I wasn't sure what I would do about sights. Thanks!

I'm not sure what brand the sights are. All I know is that they are an old style.

The sight has a standard blade type front sight and an adjustable rear sight that I V notched and widened so that that it was faster to acquire.

It isn't really an issue at all. I was just being sarcastic. It doesn't affect how the gun works at all it just looks a little less "tactical"

If it goes BOOM! on request every time and put the lead where you point, what else do you need?

I'll take substance over style EVERY time.

My "HomeLand Security" shotgun is a Maverick 88 with the 18-1/2" cylinder bore barrel. Throws very consistant pattens with #4 Buck, and will cloverleaf PMC brand plain slugs at POA 35 yds away every time.

but ya gotta love a BPS for home defense...

If the home invader gets close enough to see the vent rib or the rolled scrollwork...then you've got yourself a whole different set of concerns anyway! The BPS has actually been a PREFERRED social shotgun but some agencies. The bottom eject is handy for left handed operators. It's a tough & reliable design. There WAS a company (in Michigan I think?) that modified BPS specifically for "tactical" (I detest that word) application. They milled a non-factory, ejection port-sized, slot into the right side of the receiver so could rack (back) the slide & simply drop a shell into the chamber without going through the bottom gate & up the carrier. It make a quick slug available with a tube full of shot shells already in the gun AND made a quick, emergency reload much faster. Do a little research & you might find the details. Shouldn't be too hard to do yourself if you've got access to a mill. Be a heck-of-a mod. Nice work regardless. I'm a BIG Browning Fan!

Thanks for the follow up.

Would it be possible to take a close up photo of the sights front and rear?

Are they held on by magnets?

How good is the point of aim and point of impact at home defense distances?

Sheepdog's point is valid.

Every home defense shotgun is by default a community defense shotgun. That's why POI/POA is important.

Any HD shotgun is one hurricane/riot/earthquake/etc away from deployment outside the residence.

So know what your shotgun does at the longest shot opp in your house and also at, say,25 yards with buck and 50 yards with a slug.

We ARE the militia....

Love it. I have a Remington 1100 that the previous ovner cut down but didn't finish a vent rib full to 19". No front sight was mounted, so I added a high viz type and fixed the muzzle (no rear sight).

Used it for the first time in a 3 gun match, and found it threw slugs WAY low at 80 yards (close to 3 feet low). So, I religated it to closer range buck shot (under 30 yards) and it works fine.

I have a BPS and have thought about trying to find a second barrel to do this very thing! Now you've inspired me!
