Yikes! IMOHO those are two different roles! I wish I could be like Lucas McCain and tote my carbine everywhere but unfortunately that's not a realistic option, even here in Montana. My EDC/CCW is a sidearm, not because it's the best combat arm but because it's portable and concealable. If long guns weren't better for combat you'd see infantry troops equipped with pistols instead of rifles, and no military I know of has gone that route. If I face violence when out and about, my first choice will be break contact (IE run away!). If I can't flee and am forced to stand & fight, I'll fight with my sidearm.
But in my own home I'm not constrained by the need to conceal a weapon, nor must it be comfortable to tote around all day. My options to retreat may also be more limited at home, and if violence is visited upon me here I probably can't get away from it. So at home if I'm forced to fight I'll so with either a carbine (in 5.56 or .300 Blackout) or my Beretta 1301 loaded with Flight Control #00 Buckshot. Why on Earth would I handicap myself with a handgun if given better options?
