For what it's worth, my advice is Keep It Simple. A shotgun is a better weapon than a pistol, but a revolver is about as simple as there is to operate. No need to worry about the urban myth of "her gun will be taken away and used against her", as that only happens on TV. If you like dogs, pretty much any dog will persuade pretty much any intruder to find some other place to go intrude in. If you don't like dogs, getting one just for personal protection is probably more trouble than it's worth.

Reinforce the windows and doors, and get a police lock. It's hard to carry out a home invasion if they can't get inside. 
A 10-22 would be better than nothing. And if she likes a semiauto, get her one. It's Christmas after all.

A training course and a semi-auto ready to fire in a gun vault would be excellent. A shotgun is probably better, but whatever she feels comfortable with is best.
