Home defense - pump or semi-auto?

No shotgun yet, but it'll be a pump gun if I ever get one. Pump guns are more reliable, IMO, because if anything goes wrong with the ammo, your hand is on the forend, ready to cycle the action without taking the gun off of your shoulder/off the target. The sound is intimidating, also. Mainly, though, it's the cost. Mossberg Persuader= $300.

i like the idea of a pump because as my cousin was tought in the army you can load it everyother shell as a slug then if you dont want a slug and prefer a buckshot for that preticular shot you can pump it twice, and i like the "work" you put into pumping it.

A pump may sound scary, but you also give away your position, reduce the amount of ammo in the gun by 1, and increase the possibility that you'll screw up (remember you'll be in the middle of an adrenalin dump).

I'm thinking the perfect home defense shotgun is a Saiga 12 ... with standard AK furniture, maybe a red dot sight ... maybe a laser ... and two 8 round mags clipped together.

Put a round in the chamber, flip the safety on and put it in the closet.

I'd imagine that the sight of a fully tricked out Saiga would be more scary then the sound of a pump

20 ga. A-5 with 18.5" barrel, cause it handles like an M1 carbine. ( And because I don't like getting beat up! Ain't buying another 458 no way no how! )

12 ga. 1100 with 20" bbl., reamed for screw in choke, Choate extended mag; fore-end; and butt with pistol grip.

What y'all think of the Remington Competitor that was written up in the latest American Handgunner?

Anyway, I have a Winchester Defender but when I reach for the house long gun, it's going to be my AR - not to start that debate. :)

The Defender is backup for the AR which has night sights, a Surefire, etc.

I don't care about the sound effects, those are trivial in a well thought out home defense plan - another debate :)

Still that Remington looks nice but pricey.

870

I have an 870 with a mag extension, top folderstock and a side saddle hanging inside my closet door. I have had a couple of 1100 and 11-87's for leagues that I have sold because I could never get that left hand to stop tugging at the forearm...
