Pump shotguns have been around for many years and are generally totally reliable. One point that I believe has not been mentioned is that ejecting a spent shell after shooting with a pump shotgun is totally natural in the sense that when the round is fired, and the shotgun recoils upward, it is totally natural for the hand on the slide to pull it backward or against the recoil and eject the empty case.
I would take a pump any day over a semi-auto shotgun for general use.
