I was in my friendly neighborhood gun shop today buying my son's birthday present and shooting the breeze with some of the people there. The salesman I was working with has a son that is a police officer, and he was telling me that home invasions were becoming more and more of a problem for the citizens of Louisville. It seems as though the people doing this have a five or six man team, all wearing masks and in military garb. They ambush homeowners as they are entering or leaving their homes, hold them hostage inside the house, and burglarize their homes. Only one person of the team talks, some stay outside, and the others tend to the homeowner(s) and rob the place. They are all armed (not sure with what), and have a very well thought out plan to execute their crimes. But, due to the nature of what they steal and what they leave behind, they are believed to be amateur thieves, yet they seem to operate in a military fashion. What would you do in a situation like this ?? Keep in mind they take their victims by surprise....so there is NO time to run to the gunsafe or where ever you keep your firearms. By the way, they haven't killed any of their victims, but I'm sure as it is happening the homeowners do not know this. There has been absolutely NOTHING on the news about any of this, at least not yet. So....how would you react if you were their next victim ?

Knowing what you told me, I would alter my mode of carry and go with my G23 in my Hellweg Paddle Speed holster and my .380 AMT in my hip pocket. I wouldn't be surprised leaving as my dogs are usually out when I step out the door. When I come home, due to the layout of my yard, it would be hard to surprise me. If I wasn't privy to the info you just posted, I'd be screwed because I couldn't get to the Taurus 450 on my left ankle in time.

Maybe the Lousyville Police should run down the road and talk to the CG of Ft. Knox. Some soldiers may have found a part time job doing home invasions.

A few years ago some soldiers from the US Army 3rd Regiment in Washington DC (the guys who guard the Tomb of the Unknowns) were caught doing B&E's. The military precision of the break-ins tipped off authorities.

I know Ft. Knox had some serious gang problems back in 2001.

I'd try to break free and run! Then retrieve help and come back. Failing that, I guess I'd have to cooperate - if I was totally taken by surprise.

The best thing is now we know a new MO for this type of crime.

The usual scenerio I hear is breaking down the front door or pushing their way in when a knock at the door is answered. The criminal mind amazes me because they always come up with something new. This is the type of information the police should be broadcasting so the public knows what to look for. Instead these details are left out of news casts.

The average person should be a little more aware when coming and going from their residence. Keep an eye on places someone can hide, or strange vehicles on the street. Condition yellow before going out the door or when returning home. If my dog were to warn me that someone was lurking about I would have my gun in hand as I carry 24/7 before I made my next move. I can see everything in my front yard from several windows so if I noticed something out of place, I call 911 and stay put until they arrive. If I notice something out of place when arriving home I pull my gun, call 911, then keep driving or take them on depending on where my wife is. I think that would be the best course of action.

A remote control for the alarm system could be real handy, more so if a monitored system and remote carried on key ring in your hand!! The LOUD, unexpected siren might confuse/distract them enough for you to double tap a couple.

Stay safe, and alert.

There have been several home invasions very near my home. Its been almost a year since the last one, I still give a good look at the house as we approach the drive way. I also keep a light on out back and put my headlights on bright as I pull in. I don't have a dog, but, ALL my neighbors do. If the local dogs are being vocal it makes the hair on my neck stand up. I keep a large Maglight in both her car and my truck. I also carry a Surefire sometimes. Still, you can't be ready all the time and the BG has a way of picking the perfect wrong time(from your perspective).

I'm in Louisville and I read the paper most days. How have these home invasions been reported? I've read/heard nothing about them until this thread.

Hi All-

The crimes seem kind of high-profile not to have received any newspaper or television coverage.
