Homeowner kills 2 in bizarre burglary
Man used AR15 rifle to defend himself after 'guest' shot him in ear
http://www.worldnetdaily.com/news/article.asp?ARTICLE_ID=53555

A Packwood, Wash., man is wounded, but alive, after an evening of entertaining visitors turned into a gunfight when one of his guests opened fire on him while attempting to steal his gun collection.

The homeowner, whose name was not released by authorities, told Lewis County Chief Criminal Deputy Joe Doench that a male friend from nearby Morton, Wash., had arrived Wednesday morning for a visit, bringing with him two women and and a man from Las Vegas who he did not know.

The homeowner became suspicious, believing he was being distracted by three of the guests, so he retrieved his AR15 semi-automatic rifle and directed the visitors to another part of the house where he discovered that the fourth visitor had broken into his gun safe.

According to Seattle's KING-TV, the homeowner found one of the women loading guns from his collection into a truck and he told her to stop. She fired, hitting him in the ear. He said he fired back, killing her instantly.

The mutual friend of the homeowner and the trio from Las Vegas was also shot several times in the legs. Initial reports from the Longview Daily News suggest he was hit by stray bullets. The wounded was taken to a nearby hospital but died while waiting to be airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle. His name has not been released.

One man and his common-law wife from Las Vegas – Jason Brooks, 38, and Natalie Brooks, 44 – are being held on charges of robbery and burglary. Court papers reportedly say that one of them admitted they wanted to rob the homeowner in order to buy methamphetamine.

At this time, police are treating the incident as a case of self-defense.

"I know the individual," said Gene Seiber of the Lewis County Sheriff's Office. "There's nothing that prohibits [him] by law from possessing firearms.

"Last night he was cooperative, but you could tell he was a little shocky because the fact is he'd been shot," he said.

Guests steeling the firearms of their host seems to happen more than you'd think, though this is the first time I've heard of it escalating to the point that it did. I'm glad the homeowner is okay; I hope the DA doesn't press charges. I'm sorry for him that he was put into such a position in the first place.

A friend down the street had a nice Ruger Service Six that was stolen by a guest at a party. The Ruger was kept on a shelf under some pants in the top of his bedroom closet. He never found out who took it :fire: .

The bizzaro world of meth.

Glad the guy is OK.

Hope he recovers from the trauma of shooting two people to death.

When you own guns and other "good" stuff you have to be careful who you hang out with.

Its interesting how many of these "home owner stops burglar" threads get posted. Seems like one a day. That seems to be more than the accidental shootings I hear about on the news.

But I didn't think 5.56/.223 worked on human sized targets?

It works, in the same way .22LR is often effective in killing. Detractors of 5.56 are more questioning the dependability and quickness of disablement.

There's also the questions about the dependability of the AR15/M16 platform in dirty conditions.

Heard this local story on the radio earlier today...first time I heard them report on a self-defense use of firearms. Homeowner will spin it tonight on the sixer.

Sarcasim detector.........FAIL

Seems to be an unusually(?) high number of home security breaches resulting in the loss of life for the perpetrators lately. Is it always this high or because I'm now paying attention?
In the PRK there has been a large increase in home take overs. Home owners seem to finally getting around to defending theirselves.

Man, this is one reason I don't tell anyone near me that I own firearms. The only person who knows I own them are my mother and her boyfriend and we generally keep it hush hush. I keep mine in a gun safe when i'm not home which is already hidden and bolted to the floor somewhere. I'm surprised the guests knew where his guns were.

Wow, an EBR used to DEFEND!!
Nah, must be a typo, everyone knows those horrible black rifles just lurk around in closets waiting for schoolchildren to innocently wander by...
