I am seeking HONEST feedback on the Rossi lineup of full size .357 magnum revolvers (4" & 6" barreled guns); I am looking for a good quality and economical alternative to S&W and Ruger...

I know they are owned by Taurus, but I prefer the hammer mounted firing pin and hammer block system that Rossi copied from S&W over the transfer-bar system...

I know that they are not the most popular brand and that makes true and honest feedback hard to come by...please comment if you own or have owned a Rossi revolver

I had ONE problem with my M971, that hammer mounted firing pin snapped off. I sent it back and it was replaced and it snapped off the very first range trip. I had my gunsmith fit a new firing pin, and I never had a problem one with it after that. My gunsmith just said it "needed proper fitting". It must have had a burr where the pin goes through the hole or something. Never did quite figure out why it did that. After I had it fixed, I had no problems with it.

It had a not so smooth DA, but plenty good SA trigger. Rossi DA is acceptable, but not up to Taurus or S&W out of the box and I'm not sure who would take it for trigger work. My smith passed away from cancer or I'd recommend him. I never had the trigger worked over, though, 'cause I used it for a field gun, mostly single action shooting.

Another observation of that gun, it had light strike problems on CCI primers. I had to use Winchester or Remington primers with it, standard pistol. It did fine with factory ammo other than CCI.

Accuracy on the gun was danged decent, 2" off bags at 25 yards with either .38 or .357s it liked. It timed perfectly, handled hot handloads just fine, never got loose on me. It was a rugged little stainless gun and a joy to tote being fairly light. The full underlug combined with the excellent rubber grip it came with handled recoil better than my old Security Six.

One other criticism, I'm never seen such a cheap attempt at a red ramp in the front sight, piece of plastic that over-hung either side of the sight. I just slid it out and tossed it.

It was a good gun for the money and very easy to carry. I sorta miss it, but traded it for a .45 Colt stainless 4 5/8" blackhawk, killer deal that I'd surely do again!

There's a pic of me and a Javelina I took with it here. I took some rabbits using wadcutter ammo with it, too, on my hunting trips. It was an accurate gun for hunting out to 50 yards or so. The 4" barrel sort of limited my abilities with it past that. But, as a gun to wear while rifle hunting, it excelled.

I now have a Taurus M66 nickeled that I like more than the Rossi as a shooter, though it's a little heavier on my hip for totin'. It is 1" accurate with the same wadcutter loads and with 140 Speer JHP .357 loads. I'm pretty happy with this gun. It's a better quality gun with a MUCH better DA trigger, S&W quality. I bought it used. Not sure if the trigger got smoothed on it, but it's excellent. I could carry that Rossi IWB pretty easily, though, and the Taurus is a bit much.

I don't think Rossi offers the 971 anymore, though, but I've come across used ones. I have owned six Rossis, still own a M68 .38 special and a M511 .22. My overall impression is well worth what they cost and decent little guns, but not up to Taurus in trigger or fit and finish. Would I buy another one if I wanted it? Sure! If I could find another 971 in good shape used cheap, I'd pick it up, especially if it were a 2.5" gun. I'm sorta looking for a short barrel K frame sized gun in either .38 or .357. The 971 was not quite a K frame in size, but bigger than a SP101, though I'm sure the Ruger is a lot stronger gun. Still, it handled everything I dished out to it.

My buddy has had one for about 10 years now. It's his general use revolver and rifle hunting sidearm. It was the first revolver I ever fired full house 357 Mags out of. It's not S&W or newer Taurus quality, but it's a nice little wheelgun and great for the price.

I've owned 2 971's and both were decent out
of the box.One drawback was a lack of good
aftermarket grips for them.

I've always favored my S&W's over the Rossi, but I don't really have a valid reason for doing so. The 971VRC (3" compensated) that belongs to the resident SWMBO in my household has been 100% reliable and as accurate as any 3" S&W I've shot. S&W L frame holsters fit it perfectly.

My only gripe has to do with the coiled hammer spring, rather than an adjustable arched design, ala S&W L frame.

I don't think you'll be disappointed in a Rossi fullsize.

my only experience with Rossi has been in a .38 snubbie chief's special style gun. it was passed down from my father, it was his "tackle box" gun, and it often road in the pocket of his Carhartt when he was a trucker. it was horribly beaten and dinged, not much of the original blueing left, but it was as accurate and reliable as my S&W Chief's Special. DA was smooth, but this gun had probably gone through 10,000 rounds before it reached my hands.

I've had a full size Rossi .357 for well over 10 years now. Nice gun, accurate. I did have a firing pin break once but I accept a certain amount of wear and tear over time. Cool little gun, I'm thinking about putting a scope on it, just for giggles.:)

I have a Rossi 88 (2" stainless, 38spl) that Ihad bought as a camp gun because of the stainless finish and price. I ended up bobbing the hammer, smoothing up the action and putting a T grip on it. It's my "in town" carry now, I really like it and cannot justify buying a M60 to replace it as I had originally planned. Be ready to catch a lot of poop from the gun snobs though...

Gratuitous pic before th hammer bob:

I bought my 971 about two years ago, have put maybe 1000 rounds thru it without a hicup. It was dead on accurate out of the box and still is, single action trigger pull was quite nice. DA seemed strong at the time but I wasn't used to da and it feels acceptable to me now. I have medium sized hands and the grip is quite comfortable tho I wish it was a bit longer. The pistol is a bit barrel heavy but personally I think it helps steady my aim. The front sight is still dayglo orange but its an inlay now so no overhang. I've since bought a used S&W mod 10-6, heavy barrrel and it feels a bit more solid. They sit slightly different in my hand tho and I prefer the Rossi. They were about the same price. And I like them both - the mod 10 is a 38 spl, while the 971 is a 357 mag.

As I understand from my reading, Rossi's were always pretty much a S&W knock off, so the design and materials were good but years ago (pre Taurus buy out) the finishing quality control ran hot and cold. The new Rossi's revolvers seem like basic, value oriented guns and the quality is now pretty much under control. Based on my experience I think Rossi's are a good value and have no problem recommending the new ones. The owner of a local gunshop could use any handgun he wanted as his side arm and he carries a Rossi.
