First off I want to say, I have been reading THR for quite some time now. Some random finds have helped me with a lot of my firearm issues or questions.

I thought about it today, why not make an account? Definitely a lot of helpful people here.

I just purchased my first reloading set (Lee Breach Lock Challenger Kit) and some peripherals for it. I am currently waiting on my reloading supplies I ordered to show up (should be tomorrow/friday) so finally give it a go.

However, I was looking around, and when ordering I couldn't find many powders available so a guy from work gave me a list of good .30 cal powders and I was able to get ahold of AA2495 (the equivalent of IMR 4895 I am told)

I am starting off reloading for my 30-30 lever gun, and will branch off into my other calibers eventually. For the levergun reason, I bought 160 grain Hornady FTX bullets as I really like the way the LeverEvolution rounds performed in my gun.

Anyone have any good recipes for AA2495 (or 4895) and Hornady FTX? I cannot seem to find data for it in my reloading book or even online. I can find it for 150gr jacketed rounds but I don't want to risk trying to figure out how to compensate until I get more adept at reloading.

Thanks a bunch :D

Welcome to the forum.

While AA2495 was developed to mimic the pressure curve of 4895 it is not the same powder. DO NOT use 4895 load data with AA2495. The link above for Western Powder load data will give you what you need. Don't hesitate to ask questions...

When powders become more available there are better choices for the 30-30 especially with the FTX bullet. Hodgdon Leverevolution, Ramshot TAC and AA2520 are some of them. I use Hodgson LVR for all my 30-30 loads now but for lead loads. Even that might change too when I get a chance to test LVR with lead bullets.

IMR4895 is a grain lower at max for the FTX. LeverE works great for the FTX and cast in the 30/30 & 308. Get a recoil pad & keep your eye away from the scope.

I was looking for the LeverE powder when I bought the first batch of supplies, but couldn't find anyone with it in stock, let alone that AND primers in stock (trying to save on Hazmat fee). When it is time for another jug I will definitely look again.

As for recoil/scope, I have a Rossi Rio Grande that requires a certain scope mount... which is back-ordered 12-14 weeks from the manufacturer, and I couldn't find aftermarket. No scope until that comes in unfortunately. On top of that... 30-30 has recoil? Can't say I ever noticed it much. I am a sturdy guy, no worries of getting the black eye from the scope :p

Yea, getting a black eye or scoped by a 30-30 would be pretty hard to do. You'd have to do something seriously wrong for that to happen.

I've always wanted to play with Lever E in my 30-30s but the opportunity passed me buy with this last shortage.
