Titans asked for police help to find QB Young

By TERESA M. WALKER
AP Sports Writer

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Vince Young is awaiting an MRI exam on his sprained left knee Tuesday, hours after the Tennessee Titans sought police help in finding the quarterback the team described as "emotionally down."

Young left his home around 7 p.m. Monday without a phone, prompting the Titans to call Nashville police for help. The team got a message to Young through a friend, and the quarterback met with coach Jeff Fisher and police at team headquarters around 11:30 p.m. Police spokesman Don Aaron said Young drove himself home about 30 minutes later.

The story first was reported by WKRN-TV.

"Ultimately, it appears the initial concerns about his emotional state were unfounded," Aaron said Tuesday. "But no one actually knew that until he was spoken to face to face."

Aaron also said Young had an unloaded handgun in the glovebox of his car. Tennessee law permits unloaded firearms in vehicles as long as no ammunition is present.

Young hurt his knee late in Sunday's 17-10 win over Jacksonville and was booed heavily by fans.

"Given the totality of the circumstances, the fact that Young had been emotionally down all day Coach Fisher contacted the police department and asked for help in finding him to check on his emotional well-being," Aaron said.

The Titans said people close to Young called the team Monday night, concerned about his state of mind when he left his home.

"He was located at a friend's house, where we made contact with him. He then came to the practice facility where it was determined that those initial concerns by his friends and family were unfounded, and he returned home without incident," the Titans said in a statement.

Young's MRI exam was rescheduled for Tuesday from Monday with no explanation. Fisher said Monday if the injury is a third-degree MCL sprain, Young probably would miss a couple weeks and not be 100 percent for up to four weeks.

Veteran Kerry Collins is the only other quarterback on the roster, but the Titans worked out Quinn Gray on Tuesday. The team also was looking at QB Joey Harrington and a handful of receivers, including Glenn Martinez and Chad Jackson.

Note the gratuitous reference to the handgun in the glovebox. This story seems to be making a mountain out of a molehill. A sports figure is emotionally "down" and goes to a friend's house after he sprains a knee. Just because he doesn't have a phone with him, the cops get called. The mention of the handgun seems calculated to make him appear suicidal, something of which there is absolutely not evidence whatsoever in the rest of the story. Blech! :banghead:

The real story should be about the overreaction of whoever called the cops.

I agree with u man. That's ridiculous I played ball until the end of high school when I destroyed my knee (I've had 5 surgeries on it know) I don't know if I could have played pro but I was good and no one thought I was suicidal. Almost sounds like they were trying to cover their butts instead of really thinking he might blow himself away.

It is hard to tell from newspaper reports just what really happened in these kind of cases.

Sounds like maybe a guy who forgot his phone, or just left it at home on purpose. Something I do pretty regularly.

That's all it takes to get the police called--oh, if you're an NFL quarter back...
Yeah, they're making a mountain out of a molehill here. This is a personal problem that the police should NOT have gotten involved in.

The NFL is the ultimate anti-gun sports establishment.

That may be, but it wasn't someone associated with the NFL who wrote the story--it was a writer for the AP who mentioned the presence of the gun in the glovebox. That mention is obviously designed to link to the statement by the team (The TEAM? The entire team made such a statement? I doubt it.), so that the reader makes the conclusion that Young is suicidal. A (Young is sad) + B (Young is in possession of a handgun) = C (Young is suicidal).

This is just not sloppy "reporting" (of which it is also an excellent example). It is also a stellar display of anti-gun bias by a "reporter." :banghead:

Wow, I'm glad Nashville's such a safe town that the cops can take time out to track down a bummed out football player. And thank goodness he wasn't hanging out at a friend's house with a loaded gun in his car! Oh the horror!

I'm curious why anyone even knows he had a gun in his car. Did he tell them or do you get your vehicle searched for being out of contact with your employer now?

I'd like to know why its ok to have a law that requires guns in cars to be unloaded! Seems like a case where Heller could be applied. Unloaded guns aren't guns anymore, they are pretty paperweights. :fire:

Ask retired NFL Quarterback Steve McNair of the Tennessee Titans who went through his own nightmare several years ago.As long as you have a permit, loaded carry is OK in TN.
Steve had a TN permit, might have been a little over the limit, but had a loaded gun.Being over the limit with the loaded gun got Steve into mucho problemas.
Maybe it's a Volunteer thing.

You're right, this is a pointless story with only a single mention of a handgun.

So why do it justice by bringing it up? What hope to is to be gained by posting this so we can all slap our foreheads and rant about how silly this stuff is?

This really has nothing to do with firearms. Not one thing. So why bother?

When I read the subject "Horror--a gun" and the first paragraph "awaiting an MRI exam", my first thought was... "crap, someone got an MRI done on their knee that had a bullet lodged in it".

I don't know how I'm going to deal with this disappointment.

(hint: if you ever get an MRI done, make sure there are no bullets in you, or they become _alive_ again)

Sure it does--just ask the reporter. ;)

But seriously, the reason I brought it up is because it has to do with the public perception of firearms, something that THR is (in part) here to provide a forum to discuss. Plenty of things I'm not interested in get discussed on this forum. If I'm not interested in them, I leave the thread alone and read ones in which I am interested. Please feel free to do the same.

If it's perfectly legal for him to have the gun in his glove box, I'd like to know why it's OK for a police spokesman to reveal in public that he had it. If I'm pulled over by the police and searched, but not charged with a crime, is it OK for the police to tell the rest rest of the world what I have in my car?

If Vince Young turns up dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, I'm pretty sure you'll all feel pretty stupid. I think if people close to him thought he was capable and ready to kill himself, maybe they should be listened to.

Even if he does, I won't feel stupid,Rugerlvr.
I just checked the Constitution again and can't find any law that Vince Young has broken to this point.
Perhaps you have "inside the NFL" info that we don't.
My conscience is clear.

I would also consider the possibility that he may have actually said some specific things that alarmed his family members and we are just not hearing any of it due to after fact damage control.

Has he been accused of breaking a law? As far as I know this news story seems to amount to an endangered person report. There is a need for those.

I hope he's okay, and frankly I'm kind of shocked by the callousness of the members on this incident. You're letting the media coverage and the perceived bias against guns obscure the real story.

If Vince Young turns up dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound...
Although it would be a personal tragedy, it could be the best thing to happen to Tennessee's offense in several years.

Given what a QB can do if left unsupervised with a motorcycle(Rothlisberger)I think the concern with the gun or even a pointy stick might be warranted. Seems you need to keep a close eye on those creatures.

When you start out using that negative connotation "stupid",expect some negative feedback.
No need for that,capiche?
Now,hopefully,we are all friends again.
