CROSBY — Startled by a loud noise in the middle of the night, Jay and Russell Jefferies stumbled from their beds early Wednesday to view the monitor of their home security camera to see what had interrupted their slumber.

What they saw jolted them awake.

According to authorities, four heavily armed men were outside their small house in the 3900 block of Crosby Barbers Hill Road trying to kick in the front door about 2 a.m.

The Jefferieses, whom investigators think are brothers, rushed to grab their shotguns and opened fire as the intruders burst through the door shooting, said Harris County sheriff's Sgt. N. Araguz. One brother managed to call 911 in the midst of flying bullets, he said.

By the time Harris County sheriff's deputies responded to the weapons-disturbance call, two suspects had been fatally wounded. Several hours later, deputies arrested the other suspects on charges of aggravated robbery.

Suspects Charles Duran and Rodney Jones, both 19, had fled the scene by car, taking Robert Deleon Jones, 20, and Jonathan Garcia, 19, to San Jacinto Methodist Hospital.

Robert Jones was later taken by helicopter ambulance to Memorial Hermann Hospital in Houston, where he was pronounced dead. Garcia died at San Jacinto Methodist Hospital, Araguz said.

Deputies detained Duran and Rodney Jones at San Jacinto Methodist Hospital and took them to the sheriff's office for questioning.

''They were cooperative and gave statements," Araguz said.

The men were arrested and booked into jail. Both have been released — Duran on a $20,000 bond and Jones on a $30,000 bond, according to jail records.

Investigators said they were told that four suspects had been attempting to rob the home.

The homeowners apparently were within their rights in protecting their property and will not be charged in the shootings at this time, Araguz said.

The Jefferieses were not at home Thursday and couldn't be reached for comment.

A man who lives next door was seen Thursday afternoon screwing a plank of wood to the front door frame of the Jefferieses' home. The man declined to give his name or talk about what happened.

Araguz said investigators do not know if the suspects have been involved in other robberies, but investigators are looking into it. A search of criminal records revealed no criminal histories for the suspects.

He declined to say whether drugs were involved in the case or if the Jefferieses knew the suspects.

Araguz also said he did not know if the Jefferieses had been robbed before, but said the low-tech camera they installed helped alert them to trouble. He said it is not unusual to see homes with security cameras these days. A rise in Christmas display vandalism has partly contributed to the increase in security cameras, he said.

''A lot of people are going that route," Araguz said.

I always love a happy ending.

Thank God we live in Texas and not Kalifornistan or the People's Republic of Mass.

. . . midst of flying bullets . . .

One brother managed to call 911 in the midst of flying bullets, he said.

Anyone want to call BS on this?

Four guys with guns, two residents with shotguns, if brother #2 managed to get through to 911 in Houston, you'd think that call HAD to have been initiated before the shooting started, otherwise there ain't no way.

That whole incident, top to bottom, probably took 30 seconds. Last time I called 911 that's how much time I spent getting through the "menu" to confirm it wasn't and "accidental" call. By the time I got an operator on the line, the accident I was reporting was a mile behind me.

If 911 was on the line while shots were being fired, my money is on "called 911 before leaving the bedroom."

Of course, he COULD have been firing a shotgun one-handed while dialing emergency services . . .

Sure.

Bravo, they should get medals and free ammo for a year.

Where I am, the brothers would have been arrested for improper storage, murder, attempted murder, discharge of a firearm within city limits, careless use of a firearm etc. etc.

The surviving home invaders would have pled insanity and received 1 year medical health stay, then released with no supervision. They are the true victims!

"I'm gonna do a tactical roll over to the armoire whilst dialing 911...cover me"

Glad the good guys prevailed.

Where is this at? Just wanna know so I don't make plans to visit

Does this bother anybody else?

Mandirigma>Just wanna know so I don't make plans to visit

Canuckistan, we write the laws and California copies 'em.;)

Spot77: yeah, that seemed like a remarkably low bail amount for guys who smashed down the door to someone's house and started a gunfight. Likewise, who are probably facing some severe jail time. I'd think they would be considered an extreme flight risk in this scenario, but IANAJudge.

Yum Yum!

Home Invasion gone bad, score one for the good guys.

I hope.

Just wonder what kinda victim selection skills the goblins used. Wondered if they thought thye were breaking into a meth lab or something.

If I were one of the homeowners I'd be having a hard time sleeping until their trial.

Nah, they are prolly hoping the other two come back so they can finish off the foursome.

As I have said many times before. Our legal system is FUBAR and this is just one more perfect example.

What you mean where they will recieve probation, or a year sentence at the most? Sleep tight everyone  . As the old saying goes theres more justice in a six gun (or in this case scatter gun) than all the courtrooms in America put together.

Wow, if that's what they would've set the bond at here in IL, those guys would only have to pay 10% and they'd be out for revenge pretty quick.

I hope the good guys are ready.

The Jefferieses, whom investigators think are brothers...

What, they couldn't ask?

"Are y'all brothers, or... you know...?"

Good on 'em either way. A little Darwinism for a good cause.

Jesus Christ. Talk about a friggen nightmare. I reckon you'd need nerves of steel not to crap yourself in that lovely little situation.

You've gotta be kiddin'.

I am just happy they had the presence of mind to wait until they actually broke through the door before firing. Good job.

4 "heavily armed" guys break in firing at 2am? Anyone else think this might have been a crack house? I won't make any assumptions and good for these brothers for defending their home. Either way, 2 bad guys lost. The 2 that got away will skip bail or go for a year or 2 to earn their gang-banger butt-rape wings and be even more dangerous when they get out....keep 'em loaded guys.

I don't see anything in the story that would lead you to assume that it was a crack house. Is it that unusual that criminals, who want to take a house by force, would gang up in an attempt to use overwhelming force against the homeowner? I would bet that quite a few people on this forum, myself excluded of course, have property that when fenced is worth WAAAAYYY more than a crack house would have. Cash, jewelery, guns, etc add up pretty quick when you buy nice stuff. The story is short on details, but guessing it is a crack house is a bit of a stretch. I could be wrong though, I haven't been there personally. Who knows?

As far as calling 911, they saw them on a video camera first, possibly more than enough time to dial 911 while the brother/buddy grabbed the shotguns and they advanced towards their door. Last time I called 911 in Houston for an emergency, I was through in 10 seconds, that might have changed in the last few years but it was pretty fast.

Crosby is NE of Texas near Huffman and a few other developing neighborhoods with a median income of 35.5k and 1,714 residents. I can't find the stats for burglary though.

UPDATE- i live here in crosby and heard the homeowners sold drugs out the house so it was in fact a crack house. police did not let that get to the media because they wanted everyone to look at the 4 guys being the bad and the homeowners being completely innocent. police found drugs and guns at the home.
