How accurate are Yugo 48As in good shape?

Owners tend to claim that both the 48s and the 24/47 are accurate-but how about a 3" group at 100 yards with old 50's Yugo and Czech ammo?

After becoming a bit spoiled by aperture iron sights on other WW2 rifles, my 48A is seldom used, and I don't know any techniques to shoot it decently or consistently.

It is ironic that classic rifles with these better sights generally use higher-priced surplus ammo, if it can be found (i.e. .303).

I shoot my M48 Yugo with cast bullets and have mounted a 4X "scout scope" on it. It is as accurate as any of my new rifles. 1 1/2 inch 5 shot groups are the norm if I do my part. Most of these rifles saw no use and arrive essentually unfired. If accuracy is disappointing, check the action screws. They need to be tight to shoot well.

It's a 60 year old military rifle. Do not expect match grade accuracy. As is, a 4" group at 100 yards is all that's needed from a bolt action military rifle.

What is your intended purpose? Sounds like maybe there is a better choice for you.

My Yugo 24/47 pulls 1 inch groups at 100 yards with the only mod to the action being a Timney trigger and a 3X9 scope with a no-drill scope mount.

Before and After, still in original 8mm:

Five shot group (one outlier, was using milsurp ammo)

They vary.
My Yugo 24/47 in unmodified form with iron sights has outshot a scoped Weatherby .308 I have here at 100 yards.
No reason, beyond bore condition, that the 48A can't do better than 3 inches, with GOOD ammunition.
Surplus stuff wanders all over the map & should never be used as a yardstick for judging an old rifle's accuracy capabilities.

If all you want to do is plink, anything that pops a bullet out the muzzle will do.
If you want to shoot for hunting or critter defense, you spend the money for appropriate loads that can bring out the potential of the gun.

M-48 accuracy...

Ignition Override--My Yugo M-48 will consistently hold less than 1 1/2" groups at 100 yd, and less than 3" groups at 200 yd, benched. This is with handloads, and I could probably do better yet, but this is a hunting rifle, so I stopped handload development when I got the above.

Took a deer this past season with this rifle. 200 grain Accubond. Never seen a deer's engine room more thoroughly ruined. There is no moss on well-made 8mm ammo.

I don't use milsurp ammo in any of my rifles, even my SKS.

It boils down to bore condition. My M 48 A and M 24 47 will hold 2 .5 inch groups at 100 yds with surplus ammo.

Interesting.

SaxonPig:
Just plinking at the range (100 yards) or river (50 or less).

The problem for me -being a very 'late bloomer' with guns- is to learn how to use such iron sights.
Will call up a Gun Guru to help at the range. He did really well with his beautiful Swedish Mauser.
