Today I got a letter in the mail from the NRA, asking me to become a member to help keep my firearm rights. I only became interested in guns about 10 months ago, and haven't purchased any from any kind of gun store. (all private party sales) How the heck did the NRA know I have guns? :scrutiny:

Have you ever had a subscription to a gun or outdoor-related magazine, requested a gun-related catalog, or ordered from a place that sells gun gear? If so, there's your answer.

If you haven't done any of that, then it their crack team of psychics they use to ferret out gun owners.

Nope, no magazines. The only thing I've ordered is a catalog from centerfire systems.

Well, there ya go.

They don't know. Direct and bulk mailing are based on statistics. People who order that catalog are likely-enough to be interested in the NRA.

Just demographic research and selling of mailing lists. You fit a certain profile in some pattern of purchases or membership activities. No big deal. I often order catalogs in the names of my small (<5 tr old kids) just to see who might sell them to another list. It's not like getting a membership invite from a subversive org or the mafia, the NRA is a HUGE mainstream entity--that needs new members to push up the sales figures!

Send them a check!!! Resistance is futile!!! One of US, One of US, One of US...

(make sure you get a free baseball hat or bullet keychain---call the 800 number and hold out for a bit!)

Who doesn't get mail from the NRA? Even us lifer's get requests to join about 3 times a month. I wish I would have kept all the cheasy membership cards over the years it would be cool to go back through them.

You think that's bad? I got some SPAM a few years back that was rather surprising. I checked around my office (computer geeks) and nobody else got it. I think I saw a post here on THR where somebody got the same thing, but it wasn't too many people.

They were offering up surface to air missles, I think some Claymores, heroin, and cocaine! I'm not sure what I did to get on that list, but man, do they have me pegged or what?! :D

Mailing lists get circulated like blood through your veins. Just part of bidness.

I once asked for some information under the name of Pyotr I. Tchaikowski.

It was fun watching the mispellings and variations on stuff I got through the mail for the next year from every company in the world... well, maybe every other company in the world.

While membership in a pro-RKBA (Right to Keep and Bear Arms) organization of your choice is always desirable, the NRA is the 500 lb gorilla with respect to fighting for RKBA in Congress... and elsewhere.

Whichever RKBA organization you choose, you will always find something to bellyache about... that's the nature of any organization, so don't let that bother you too much.

I can even complain about thehighroad dot org (THR) if I put a mind to it, but that doesn't mean that THR is not a wealth of information and a lot of fun.

It takes bucks, and big ones, to counter the very well-financed anti Second Amendment forces in the country, and indeed around the world, so you can expect solicitations for money fairly often.

For now, though, just join, and add yourself to the millions of gun owners across the country.

You and three million* others are what make it the 500 lb gorilla.

Someone sold my name to AARP :fire:
Now I get hearing aid, cremation, viagra, reverse mortgage and other old people ads.
I'n not even 25 yet, and I don't have a home or mortgage!!!!!!
I don't need any of that stuff. I just wish I knew how I got on the old people mailing list.

I bought some things from Cheaperthandirt.com. It's the only place I've bought gun related stuff online before, everything else has been in store, and I didn't give them my address (I also only got into guns relatively recently). Just after that, I started getting gun related junk mail. Magizine subscriptions, catalogs to several different places etc. I checked the website, they sell your name and address. I changed my address in the CTD account and won't be ordering from them again. Midway lets you check a box, that says you don't give them permission to sell your info, I'll be buying from them in the future.

Keep an eye on the privacy policies of online retailers.

I used to be in the advertising biz and you could buy mailing lists for direct mail campaigns (or any other advertising function) of practically anything. For example, you could buy lists of people who bought sporting goods, cars, a new home, etc. I even bought a list of US peanut farmers once to direct mail a piece for a farm management company we had as a client. I am sure your name came from a list like this that got recorded when you bought from centerfire

I get that stuff all the time and I hate it but hey i get good deals online, lol

Kungfuhippie I got coke all over the keyboard, lol lol lol lol

Firearms registered with manufacturers?

I know some manufacturers include NRA literature with new firearms. Gun companies have a vested interest in the right to keep and bear arms. I would guess they are the most likely source of gun ownership status to the NRA.

The NRA also tracked me down. I have never purchased a firearm online.

I have, however, requested catalogs from various manufacturers that include Ruger, Smith & Wesson, Springfield Armory, and Walther to name a few.

Other than that, I'm a member of The High Road, The Firing Line, and was a member of Packing.org as well.

I don't mind the NRA contacting me, but they didn't get my information from me directly. It came from a major firearms manufacturer whom I requested a catalog from.

It seems to have simmered down since the benefactor card showed up. I'm thinking they need to invent a new level before I get solicited again but that's far from certain.
