The 10xx-series Smiths are built like tanks. My old 1066 was a LEO trade-in and had a good round count through it by the time I got it, and it never missed a beat.
I had a 1076, that I put about 2500 rounds through before I sold it to a buddy. I still see it now & then. I'd guess it's seen about 4000+ rounds so far.
In my opinion the S&W 10xx guns are some of the most underrated handguns out there. They're extremely well built and durable and do a great job of handling the 10mm cartridge.
There was a used one over at Woodsmens for $300ish.
Brent painted it camo and was shooting deer with it last time I talked to him. I would assume that the camo paint would come off with a little effort, they are all stainless as far as I know. Might be worth looking into.
tlhelmer:
My vote would be the 1066 for home defense and the 1006 for target. If I had to pick just one it would be the 1066. I have both and really like them. The reason I would pick the 1066 over the 1006 is it's lighter and better balanced (for me). I find the 1006 a little nose heavy. YMMV
Well, I'm mainly a revolver guy, but I do have one 10mm. It's a 1086 (DAO) that I sold a G20 to buy. I don't think I'll be getting rid of it anytime soon.
I agree with everyone else here about the 10xx series.
